In 1954. the XK 120's were superseded by the mechanically updated
XK 140's fitted with the more powerful 190 bhp XK engine which had
been used in the Special Equipment 120's. The new models were
visually similar to their predecessors differing in external
details only. The fixedhead had an extended roof line and. together
with the drophead Coupé. was given two small extra seats in the
rear suitable for children or adults for a short journey. making
the XK's a little more practical for the family man. Overdrive was
now an optional extra and the car could be ordered with a C-Type
head in which case power output was increased to 210 bhp.
Very similar to the first XK 120's with bespoke aluminium bodies. br/>this spectacular XK 140 has had a full aluminium body. hand-crafted
in Germany at vast expense by the last owner. This includes an
aluminium boot lid. bonnet. doors & wings. At the same time. br/>the car was fitted with upgraded brakes. a five-speed Getrag
gearbox and a highly tuned. triple carburettor and 3. 8 litre
engine. It should be noted that this gorgeous example cost a small
fortune to build nearly €200. 00 by all accounts. which was done
with the intention of creating the ultimate driver's XK for fast
road use. It is finished in perfect silver paintwork to the
exterior with medium green leather and carpets to the interior. A
Kenlowe fan is fitted to assist in cooling duties up front. Driving
this car extemporises how exhilarating it is to drive indeed it
makes standard XK's look positively pedestrian. The road-holding is
superb due to the fitting of over-sized radial tyres which also
make for a more comfortable ride. The late owner was quite tall so
it suits people who are long in the leg far better than a standard
car although this can be adjusted through the peddle-box. With all
the work completed and the invoices settled. this represents a good
time to invest in a seriously well engineered motorcar.
