1979 Panther Lima II Turbo
Left-Hand Drive. 19. 45 Original Miles. Rare Turbo Lima
Panther Cars asked Robert Jankel. who had designed the Rolls Royce Corniche. to style the Lima in 1977. The design brief suggested that a break be made with the low volume. high cost. exotic designs that were abundant in Europe almost thirty years ago. Jankel went to work and produced what he called. “a rebellion against the boredom of motoring today. ” His styling captured the classic elegance of a 1930 s European sports car. The strategy was simply to build a car that would appeal to enthusiasts who were attracted to vintage classics but had neither the time. opportunity or inclination to spend their leisure hours crawling around the car with a wrench and box of spare parts. This woul dbe the car that was maintenance free and as economical as the family sedan. Yet it would provide the sheer joy and exuberance of vintage driving.
In manufacturing such a car. Panther drew heavily on larger manufacturer's parts bins rather than go to the research and development expenses of making its own. Originally the manufacturer intended to use Triumph TR 6 and Spitfire parts. but British Leyland were not happy to see a competitor use their parts for such an exclusive sports car. Panther went to Vauxhall Motors for its 2. 3 litre engine. running gear. brakes and suspension. Some smaller parts were obtained from the MG Midget and Jaguar's XJ 6. The magnum engine was motored at the factory before being installed so that there was no need of running in procedures.
The Lima could be driven like a sports car right out of Panther's Weybridge Surrey factory. The body is made from high impact glass fibre. light weight. but with enormous strength. the car uses steel doors for greater driver and passenger safety.
Part way through the production of Lima ' s 200 cars an update was used to create the Lima II. Sixty units of this model were built incorporating a box construction chassis instead of the Vauxhall Magnum floor pan. The Lima II chassis provided greater rigidity and further safety for the occupants. Ten of these Lima IIs were fitted with turbo chargers. It is one of these rare turbo charged cars that we have for sale here.
This 1979 Panther Lima II Turbo was sold new to a man in Calary. Alberta who was the representative for Castrol Oil in Western Canada. It was a promotional car for Castrol because of their relationship with Panther Cars in the UK. It ' s since had three more owners in British Columbia and the mileage of just 19. 45 miles is correct and original. It comes with soft top. tonneau cover. spare parts. such as timing belt and a large file of receipts. owner records and articles on the car. The official distributor for Panther Cars in Canada at the time was a Jaguar dealer in Toronto. Ontario. The turbo charged Lima II put out an additional 25 hp over the standard naturally aspirated version.
Past owners believe this to be the last of the Panther Lima II Turbos to leave the factory. It is certainly a very unique and rare car. Designed by Robert Jankel. built in Panther Cars factory in the UK. this is no kit car. It ' s two seat cockpit is snug. comfortable and well laid out. The gear stick comes to hand readily and the gearbox moves the car along easily in all four gears. Acceleration is strong to the 90 mph mark. but a little slower to the 100 mph mark.
