The Nissan S 30 (sold in Japan as the Nissan Fairlady Z and in
other markets as the Datsun 240 Z. then later as the 260 Z and 280 Z)
was the first generation of Z GT two-seat coupé. produced by Nissan
Motors Ltd of Japan from 1969 to 1978. It was designed by a team
led by Mr. Yoshihiko Matsuo. the head of Nissan's Sports Car
Styling Studio. HLS 30 was the designation of the lefthand drive
model and HS 30 for the righthand drive model. This model was sold
in the United States for the 1974 model year only but was available
in other countries until 1978. A three-speed automatic transmission
was an option and the four-speed manual standard. 1974 brought for
the first time to the S 30 line a new 2+2 seating option. which
offered room for four passengers and an extra 11. 9 inches of
wheelbase. These cars have a notably different roofline from the
two-seat coupés. incorporating larger opening quarter panel
windows. The 260 Z claimed a few updates and improvements over the
240 Z. The climate controls were more sensibly laid out and easier
to work. and those cars with air conditioning now had the system
integrated into the main climate control panel. There was also
additional stiffness in the chassis due to a redesign of the
chassis rails which were larger and extended further back than
previous models. The 260 Z debuted a redesigned dashboard and
console and door panels for the interior. together with updated
tail lights.

This 260 Z has been imported into the UK from Nevada and is
described as being totally free of rust. However. the vendor. a
well respected restorer. has carried out a total mechanical and
bodywork restoration on this Datsun. The engine has been rebuilt
and a six-branch stainless steel exhaust system fitted. New Koni
shock absorbers have been fitted to the front and new suspension
bushes throughout. A full bare-metal re-spray has been carried out
and the metallic black paint finish appears to be first class. A
new leather interior has also been fitted. We are advised the car
will be registered on UK number plates prior to the auction and the
car will come with a full Mo T test certificate. We were unable to
test drive the 260 Z prior to the auction due to the restoration
nearing completion however. due to the fastidious nature of the
vendor. we do not expect anything other than a first class example
when finished.
