1954 Metropolitan Convertible. E-3615. Built mid-February 1954. Very early car. probably one of the first convertibles off the line. 38. 36 miles. Very solid. nearly rust free-car. Bottoms of the doors have some bubbles. but they have not gotten any worse since I bought the car in April 2000. Floors are rust free. Re-painted sometime in its life original shade of Caribbean Blue. New “Crutcher” interior. patterned off original. Hartz tan cloth convertible top. never been put down.
Original Austin A-40 Engine rebuilt using N. O. S. parts through-out. Runs perfect. Brakes have been brass sleeved and work very good. Runs. drives like a car this age should. Original style 5. 20 bias ply tires. fresh painted rims. Original spare tire cover and original black convertible boot.
I drive this car regularly in the summer. We have frequently taken 200-mile drives. With the 4. 625:1 rear end and the all of the whopping 42-hp. it's a nice 50-to-55 mph car. Does not like Interstate speeds. unless it's on a trailer.
This is not a perfect car. but is very presentable. Could stand a fresh coat of paint. dash could also stand a fresh coat of paint. Engine compartment was restored when the engine was rebuilt. New wire harness was also installed at that time. All the smoke had left the original wires! I also had the radio converted to AM-FM. with a jack for a one of those new fangled contraptions all the kids walk around with.
Pictures were taken about a month ago; we are just now getting some enjoyable summer weather. Spring never came. we have gone into summer.
