Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep
immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all
the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. Before the war. br/>Rover had produced luxury cars which ceased to be in demand in the
immediate post-war period and raw materials were strictly rationed
to those companies building construction or industrial equipment.
Rover's original factory in Coventry had also been bombed. forcing
the company to move into a huge factory it had built in Solihull
for constructing aircraft. Re-badged models were introduced in 1983
as the Land Rover 90 and the Land Rover 110 with the numbers
representing the wheelbase in inches. Recently Land Rover has
announced the demise of the Defender with production scheduled to
end on December 2015. after a continuous production run of 67
years.
This Land Rover has been the property of the British Ministry of
Defence and was first put into service on 23 rd July 1987. The
initial plan was to have the 110's for 20 years this was then
changed to 30 years although the cars were to receive an upgrade
termed 'Project Tithonus'. This particular Defender has been
upgraded and is being sold some three to four years since the
modifications. The upgrade includes a fully integrated roll over
cage. later seats. 'Wolf' style hardtop. front disc brakes. new
tyres to name a few. As with most military vehicles. they are well
looked after mechanically and this 2. 5 litre diesel engine example
is no exception.
It has also been refurbished cosmetically
and given the age. condition. mileage and taking into account this
Defender is offered at 'no reserve'. could well prove to be a
bargain. The necessary paperwork will be supplied to register the
vehicle.
Interested parties should note that vat. charged at 20%. br/>will be levied upon the final hammer price of this lot.
