Bid with Confidence! Brief History:
This vehicle was built at the South Gate. California assembly plant. distinguished by the “C” in the VIN number. It was originally purchased new by Frank and Matilda Khop. in Hollywood. California. They lived in North Hollywood where the car spent most of it life.
(See Photos and documents of original owners. )
Mr. Khop passed away in 1963. and the car was used sparely throughout the years by his wife Matilda. The original California "Black Plate" license plates will go along with the sale of the vehicle.
In the early 90's. the second owner. a gentleman in Texas completed a high level restoration. I then purchased the vehicle from the second owner and brought it to Ohio 7 years ago.
This vehicle has won numerous prestige's awards including receiving First Place and "Best of Show" at the 2009 Oldsmobile Nationals. scoring 996/1000 points. It also did very well and placed at a well known Concours d'Elegance event. Making this Super 88 even more desirable and rare. it rolled out of the South Gate. California plant. with its "J2 Tri-Power" option bolted on the engine from the factory. It wasn't added later or at the dealership. So it is a true “Factory J2” car. This is determined by the “W” stamped into the body tag. It has been a proven fact that the only assembly plant that designated a true J2 vehicle was from the South Gate. California by having the “W” on the body tag. You can say this was Oldsmobile's first “W” machine Muscle Car.
On a fun note. the vehicle was rumered to be used for reference in the making of the "Highway 61" diecast 1:18 scale metal models. Body & Paint:
This vehicle was stripped. properly prepped. primed. blocked sanded several times and then painted in 1992. It was extremely solid and rust free when it was restored. It still retains all its original body panels. floor pans. and trunk pans. Nothing was replaced. patched. or welded. Everything is holding up very well. Nothing has popped or blistered over the past 22 years due to bad body work or hidden issues. From what I was told it is lacquer with clear lacquer top coat. It has held up extremely well throughout the years due to proper storage and lack of use and exposure. However there seems to be some light checking of the paint on the two front fenders only. It can only be seen in direct sun light and could not even picked it up on camera to show. Also this checking cannot be felt but just seen in extreme sunlight only. I'm sure this is due to the age of the paint. This Super 88 still retains its original color scheme of "Gold Mist Metallic" front and the "Gold Mist Metallic" rear and the "Onyx Black" stripe. Please view picture of body tag denoting these paint colors. Code 91-91-10. The color is 100% correct. The body is extremely straight with no waives. The body panel alignment is perfect with the correct gaps. The paint gloss is excellent with a very deep shine. The paint. body and color are absolutely gorgeous as you can see from the pictures. Many of these 57 Oldsmobiles came two toned. This one was ordered special all one color. Chrome & Trim:
The chrome and stainless steel trim on the car is beautiful. The chrome has been all professionally re-plated. Even things like the window frames have been re-plated. The rear bumper exhaust ports are in beautiful shape. All of the stock stainless steel trim moldings have been professionally straightened and polished to a chrome like finish. Interior:
The interior was re-done in 2009 using all the correct fabrics and materials. It was done by a professionally reupholster shop that does the best work around on very high end automobiles. As you can see from the pictures it's a quality job. and it was not cheap. The vehicle is equipped with a factory Power Seat and Power windows that are all working perfectly and fast! The padded dash. headliner. carpet and rear deck pakage tray are all in excellent condition. The chrome instrument panel area is polished and looks great with all the correct knobs and switches. The steering wheel is perfect without any cracks. chips or wear marks. The lights. wipers. gauges. clock. heater. and horns are all working correctly. Engine Compartment:
Under the hood is the stock 371 cu. in. "Rocket" engine with the factory installed "J2" Tri-Power setup. This engine was rated at 300hp. All three carburators have recently been rebuilt and still restains the correct ID and date coded metal tags. They have been adjusted and are dialed in for peak performance. The engine compartment is highly detailed and is totally correct right down to the brand new correct $300 reproduction maintenance free battery. The J2 setup is outfitted with the optional and extremely rare “First Style” BatWing air cleaner. The engine was rebuilt along with the 4 speed Hydra-Matic transmission and has about 4000 mile on them. The car runs and drives absolutely perfect. smooth as silk. and extremely strong. Shifts out beautifully. No issues!!!
It equipped with power steering and power brakes. The braking system was completely rebuilt including the Tredel-Vac. They work great without any pulling. noises. or vibrations. Frame & Undercarriage:
The undercarriage is highly detailed and spotless. Let the pictures speak for themselves. This car has never recieved a "Frame Off" restoration because it did not need to be torn down that far. When the undercarriage was cleaned and detailed. all the factory markings were still visable. These markings were then put back as you see in the "Before and After" pictures. This was an extremely clean. rust free and solid Californa car. Just look at the condition of the smooth frame. There are no pock marks or any past rust scars. It also has never needed to be media blasted or repaired. Even the original fuel tank was just cleared. (Not painted silver. )
Nine times out of ten. people selling a car would not talk about or take any photos of the underside. The undercarriage tells you a lot about the car. that is why there are a few pictures of the bottom in the photo gallery. Please view them all. Glass:
The car is equipped with factory tinted glass. The windshield and rear glass pieces are original and are in excellent condition. Side glass windows have been replaced with new correct tinted glass. These new pieces have the Soft/Ray logo and correct date codes etched into the glass. The power windows work flawlessly and are lightning quick. Wheels & Tires:
Keeping with the original stock appearance. the tires are Bias Ply B. F. Goodrich 900 series wide white walls. They have approximately 4000 mile on them. The tires are mounted on the factory steel rims that are painted in the correct body color. (Code 91 "Gold Mist Metallic") The vehicle has the correct factory spinner hubcaps. These are NOS. and not re-pops. The spinners are perfect without any scratches. dings. or dents. Wheels/Tires have been balanced. Trunk:
The trunk compartment is finished to its original state. It sports the correct B. F. Goodrich bias ply 900 series WWW tire that has never hit the ground. (The spare tire matches the four other tires. ) The factory jack and jacking tools are all in their place. Finishing off the trunk is the jack instruction sticker and trunk light that are mounted on the underside of the trunk lid. This area is in excellent condition just like the rest of the vehicle.
