1956 Lincoln Continental Mark II

After WWII the competition between General Motors. Ford and Chrysler intensified.   Ford's styling department was directed to come up with a high end. personal car that would be the continuation of the Lincoln Continental produced from 1939 through 1948. this of course was prompted by Harley Earls styling department coming up with some fantastic designs of their own and Ford wanted to remain competitive.   The result of this mix of competition and desire to continue the heritage of the Lincoln Continental resulted in the Lincoln Continental Mark II introduced in 1956.   Basically every possible accessory that could be put on the car was standard equipment except for air conditioning.   When the car went into production the automobile magazines of the day and the general public received the car with much acclaim.   Today the Lincoln Mark II has become a highly desirable collector's item and besides being one of the most attractively designed cars in the 20th century it is also a highly functional car and it can tour both highways and cruise all day at speeds of 90 mph (if that were legal) with extreme comfort.   One of the great automotive enthusiasts and writers of the day was Floyd Clymer and later in this auction we have copied an article that he wrote about the car.

The 1956 Mark II that appears in this auction has been fully restored approximately in the early 1980s and mechanically redone in 2002 and comes in one of our favorite colors of white with the complimentary green interior. redone in green leather “style interior”.   As we said before. all the accessories are standard including the AM Town & Country original radio and the car is equipped with the original 15” wide white wall tires and the original vained wheel covers.   An electric fuel pump has been added by the owner to make things more efficient in starting the car when it has been sitting for a while.

This car shows extremely well and is one of the top color combinations for this series and it has the highly desirable factory air conditioner with a new compressor.   To top that off the mileage on the odometer is indicated at 39. 24 miles and it is believed to be the correct mileage but there is no paperwork to verify that this is absolutely the correct mileage.

Excerpts from the The Lincoln Continental published by Floyd Clymer in 1963. It is interesting to note that the Lincoln Continental went as far as to even filter the air coming off the air conditioner.   This was certainly the most advanced car of its day and the styling is an enduring quality that will last forever.   See attached photos of article.
