1935 Pontiac

A little history may be of interest before we describe the car in this ad.   Just about everybody knows that in 1929 there was the big stock market crash.   It was not only a game changer for the stock market but for all the economic industries in the United States.   The automotive industry. was one of the largest that existed and became severely affected.   All of the GM divisions decided to come out with smaller lower priced cars as a mate car for each division.   For example. Cadillac came up with the LaSalle and Oakland came up with the Pontiac.   The economy became stronger in the later 30s. and after WWII all the divisions of General Motors that had picked a smaller mate name to help the profit structure dropped their smaller marquees and stuck with the original brand name.

However. Oakland did a flip flop and gave up the Oakland name and Pontiac became the name for that division.   So it is less then ironic that in 1935 Pontiac was receiving a lot of attention from the General Motors hierarchy and Pontiac came out with some fabulous designs that included amazing Art Deco styling cues such as the dramatic Waterfall Grille that extended all the way across the hood. a full solid roof and hydraulic brakes.   Pontiac also managed to design their four-door sedans to be some of the most stylish four-door sedans that were being produced in 1935.

The car in this ad lives up to the concept that Pontiac was very stylish in 1935 with all their Art Deco styling cues.   Pontiac's six-cylinder design was known to be bullet proof and to have a lot more torque then the competition.   In most cases the total displacement of Pontiac's six-cylinder was very close to the total displacement of most other eight-cylinders of the day.

The car that you see before you in this auction as you can tell has not been detailed or polished or cleaned for the ad photos.   However we think you can see from the photos that it looks very nice and will look even more striking when detailed.   The seller has decided to sell the car which is a fantastic opportunity for somebody to have a car that accommodates the entire family and is a wonderful and fantastic touring car.   The backseat is like a living room couch with tons of legroom.   The car is easy to get in and out of with the suicide doors. Please note actual mileage unknown but eBay requires something in the miles description so we put 100.

Note the little extra bumperette in the front to protect the waterfall grille.    Here at MissChiTown we just love the Art Deco parking lights on the front fenders.   Just to show that the car is a fully deluxe model it is equipped with the stainless steel trim rings on all four wheels along with its original taillight with the Pontiac Chief logo.   Pontiac was a very proud brand and they tended to put their logos all over the Pontiac automobile. not only on the outside but even on the cast iron engine.

This car looks fully original and starts. runs and drives very dependably but could use a thorough detailing and deep cleaning of the interior.   When the seller took this car out for the first time in awhile he was very pleased at how easily it started up and drove.

If you are looking to get into a mid-30s classic that should never let you down at a reserve price that is extremely low we can suggest that you would be wise to try to be the winner on this car.

The following is information from the Internet.

1935 ushered in some significant new designs and features for Pontiac. A new "waterfall" grille that continued over the top of the hood to the cowl. dubbed "Silver Streak" trim became one of the motifs that defined Pontiac until the mid 1950's. The Fisher Body's all-steel "Turret-top" designs. which eliminated fabric inserts in the cars' roof. went a long way in preventing injury and death during roll-over accidents. Hydraulic brakes and "suicide door" hinges on the front doors were also innovations for 1935.

The 1935 Pontiac also featured a new fender design that was larger and more rounded and were stamped with horizontal speedlines just behind the wheel openings.

For 1935 the 'vee' effect split windshield began a design that would remain through 1952.

The 1935 featured a streamlined design and based on the General Motors “A”.

New L-head six cylinder engines designed by chief engineer Benjamin H. Anibal replaced the previous sixes that had been produced from 1926 to 1932.   The new L-head was well built and durable. due in no small part to its four main bearings and fully counterweighted crankshaft.

The six cylinders were larger than the eight's. with a bore of 3. 38 inches and a stroke of 3. 88 inches.   This compared to the eight's 3. 19-inch bore and 3. 50-inch stroke.   As a result. the displacement of the six was not much smaller then that of the eight:  208 cubic inches versus 223 for the eight.

With a single-barrel Carter carburetor and a 6. 2:1 compression ratio. the new six made 80 bhp at 3600 rpm.   This was remarkably close to the eight's 84 bhp at 3800 rpm. also developed with 6. 2:1 compression and a single-barrel Carter carburetor.

For 1935. new micropolished rod and main bearings provided additional durability to an engine already noted for its toughness.

This car located in the Midwest and after getting a little TLC and cleanup and maybe a new set of tires this car should be prepared to travel long distances with club tours. (We always recommend that a new buyer fully go through any collector car purchased because as in this case the car is almost 80 years old).

MissChiTown endeavors to bring to eBay cars that are of major interest in the all the economic levels. the reserve on this car is so low it probably shouldn't have one.   You can bid to have a car that will give you lots of pride of ownership and plenty of attention any time you park it.
