The striking Marcello Gandini designed Countach was first shown as a prototype at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. At the time its wedge shape body with distinctive scissor doors was seen as futuristic.

a mid-mounted longitudinal Lamborghini V 12 with the 5-speed gearbox ahead of the engine and drive to the diff running back through the sump.

The production version LP 400 was available in 1974. with extra ducts added to aid engine cooling. The original model was superseded by the LP 400 S in 1978. featuring wider tyres covered by wheelarch extensions. 1982 saw the engine enlarged from 4. 0 to 4. 8 litres. this version being known as the LP 500 S. For 1985 the engine capacity grew to 5. 2 litres and gained four valves per cylinder. This 5000 QV model became the first Countach available in the USA. with Bosch injection replacing carburetors on the Federal version. For 1988 a 25 th Anniversary edition was introduced featuring revised air vents and rear lights. This continued in production until replaced by the Diablo in 1990. by which time just over 2000 had been built.
