If you were to walk into your local Cadillac dealership in 1977. in search of one of the revolutionary new Cadillac Sedan DeVille's. the car you are viewing now would absolutely pass for a "demonstrator" or "executive-driven" Cadillac 37 years ago. Literally un-driven in the last 35 years. this car has been meticulously stored in a museum environment and with just 1474 miles is. without question. the finest of its kind and is among the best preserved 1977 Cadillac's you will find anywhere on earth. 1977 was a breakthrough year for Cadillac as they unveiled a revolutionary design that its critics derided as "too small" and "not like they used to make them. " And thank goodness for that! The American luxury car makers were emerging from a period when cars had become increasingly obese and bloated. Laboring under huge bodies lathered with padded tops. pillowed everything and suffocating emissions equipment. the luxury cars of that era were out of breath and nearing extinction. until this revolutionary car came along. The chassis was home to the Sedan DeVille from 1977-1984 and lived on through the venerated Fleetwood Brougham until 1991-an unprecedented 15 year run. But the 1977 remains an instantly identifiable classic because of its distinctive tail lights (a throwback from 1969) and the large square configuration of the iconic grille. This car was originally purchased by a rancher in Alaska who. as it was told to me. walked into a Cadillac dealership and was ignored because he was in his dungarees. boots and hat. He was so insulted by the snub that he walked into the general manager's office and asked for the most expensive car in their inventory and wrote a check on the spot. He stored it properly and drove it sparingly; logging almost the entire 1474 miles now on the speedometer. until it eventually fell into the hands of a collector who kept it in a vast indoor collection of million-dollar cars for 32 years. Only when trucked in his specially designed climate controlled carrier was it ever moved. and was otherwise kept on jacks and started regularly by staff mechanics to keep fluids fresh. To say it has virtually never been driven since the late 70's is absolutely accurate. Since then. the distance this car has moved under its own power and inertia can be measured in feet. certainly not miles. Even so. it starts up effortlessly. on the first pass. and runs smooth. clean and smoke free. Finished in the timeless triple black color combination. this car is as crisp and new as it was the day it rolled off the GM assembly plant in Detroit. Michigan and still retains the stance and crispness of a well-tailored tuxedo. Its original black top virtually sparkles without any discoloration. bubbling or fading. When the factory applied the vinyl top to this Sedan DeVille. it was mercifully spared the indignity of the "padded" vinyl roof which became more bloated with time and. as the padding underneath dried. was an eyesore that had to be replaced. Time has virtually stood still inside the cabin of this wonder. thanks to the fact that it was specially ordered with a cloth interior (so much better than leather for collectors). and at an additional cost. Because of that there is no drying. fading. creasing or signs of wear. It is perfectly preserved to day one standards. as is the headliner (zero sagging) and dash board. And as much as I cringe when I hear this expression. in this case it's true: this car has the unmistakable smell of a new car. Virtually every electronic component and feature operates flawlessly and properly. From the cruise control to the power antenna. to the air conditioning system. analog clock. windows and seat functions. this car is simply: new. The paint is absolutely without imperfection and is 100% original. without a single ding. dent or pinprick flaw. It has never been touched since original GM production and as a result of countless hours of hand rubbing. shows mirror perfect without even the slightest fading or inconsistency. The factory applied hand-pinstripes are as new and even the original bumper fillers are in day-one condition. an utter rarity. The fiber optics on the front end of the massive hood are crisp and clear. and all the light and directional bezels gleam as new and are crystal clear. as are the factory installed headlamps. The engine compartment is not soiled with the horrible shiny goop and spray paint that many collectors try to pass off as original and the engine bay is simply white-glove clean and preserved to day one standards-right down to the factory tags. markings. ties. belts and hoses (note the correct and unturned blue-finished Cadillac bolts throughout). The engine glistens with its original paint. chalk and factory markings. telling the story of an engine that has never reached a high enough temperature to discolor the factory applied Cadillac-blue paint that frames this massive 7 liter (425 cubic inch) power plant. But just wait until you see the under-carriage. You've heard the expression. "the bottom looks as nice as the top. but in this instance it is absolutely true. The brass brake springs shine like new and the authentic and original GM exhaust system and fittings are untouched. zero corrosion and indisputable proof that this car has never seen an element of mother nature other than pure oxygen. The entire under-carriage is factory fresh. perfectly preserved to day-one standards. and is a marvel to behold. It sits on its factory original tires and correct Cadillac wheel caps. but I also have a set of Tru-spoke wheels with Cadillac centers and Vogue tires to give it an entirely different look (see photos). which are available at additional cost. And although it is not a difficult accomplishment to find a 1977 Cadillac Sedan Deville (they were such a reliable car. some can still be seen as drivers on the road today). it is a near impossibility to find one that has been properly stored and has not seen an element of deterioration as the natural result of the passing of over 37 years. But this car is something much more than that: it is a nearly un-driven. 1474 miles. window-sticker. perfectly preserved standard bearer of another era. finished in a timeless and flawless triple black color combination; thereby making it absolutely impossible to duplicate. To put it succinctly. this is a one-of-a-kind car cannot be replaced and there is not another one like it anywhere on earth. The price has been established in consideration of the fact that it is a rapidly appreciating asset that is without peer among modern collectors and is a car that is sure to increase in value and collectability.
