JOHN MILES'

1930 ULSTER REPLICA

Reg KR 2324

Genuine 1930 registration number with all correct engine and chassis numbers and shown on V 5 as “Sports”.

Chassis stiffness measured and developed in stages with and without engine mounted resulting in total torsional stiffness gain of 300% to 275 Nm/deg. (see 750 bulletin March 2012).

Body and side sponson modifications by Rod Yates. Engine bay “A” frames. and double riveted bulkheads conceived to complement chassis stiffness modifications. resulting in further stiffness gains to 528 Nm/deg total. and no less than 960 Nm/deg in the cockpit area (see 750 bulletin March 2012). Engine uses

Phoenix 1 5/16” splash fed crank. EN 19 rods and self aligning main bearings. Special porting and ‘37 cylinder head development by Forge Engineering. Engine build + elegant water pump installation by Stuart Rolt. Features timed Pigsty Race 1 cam and new low mounted motorcycle dynamo. Iron clutch linings Gives 39 bhp at 5. 00- 6000 rpm (see 750 Bulletin May 2012). Has proved reliable and more torquey since further anti icing inlet manifold mods.

Gearbox 3 speed “fake” Ulster via 17:25 constant mesh gears. Newly built spare Ulster gearbox as above also available. and an ultra low first gear cluster for hill climbs.

Rear Axle Correct 1931 long nosepiece type with all new sealed bearings and cut down Ruby half shafts. Currently fitted with 5. 625:1 CWP for hill climbs. No leaks.

Front and rear suspensions Unique “wide based” system inspired by 1960 s F 2 Cooper transverse leaf rear suspension design where rear spring is located between rollers. Lightened Ruby front axle connects to front spring that mounts between radiused blocks allowing the whole spring to flex in double wheel bump. but form an “S” shape in single wheel bump. thus offering stiffer rates in roll. whereas the standard A 7 suspension is very stiff in bump and weak in roll.

Rear suspension features twin stator 4 disc dampers and a Panhard rod to provide a lateral location “steady” characteristic (see 750 Bulletin April 2012). Additional “heave” damper is now fitted. All new sealed bearings.

Steering Extended and stiffened steering arm results in approximately 15% reduced gearing and controllability gains. This is combined with spherically jointed drag link and rebuild steering box with needle roller thrust bearings. Many other detail mods (see 750 Bulletin April 2012).

Seat Increased side support for competition. and upholstered in the best Bedford Cord! Electrics/Instruments p rofessionally re-wired with correct armoured cable/Instruments correct except for electronic revcounter.

Brakes Much work on cable operated semi-Girling brakes all round feature Birkett/Rolt style actuation from the centre line with sliding F/R compensation and 2/3 length rear levers. The Ruby front axle features usual caster stay. and newly introduced short Bowden cables operating on 90 deg rotated back plates (see 750 Bulletin Feb 2014)

Wheels and tyres New built extra strong ½ in offset 15”x 3” front wheels and 15” x 4” rear wheels shod with Firestone F 560 currently fitted. Alloy front rims and 2 nd pair of rear wheels with Dumlop R 5 tyres also available. Wheels alone cost £1. 00! Car weighs 350 kg with full road equipment. Perfect for Hadley series.

Needs lightweight driver to release full potential! Will do Shelsley Walsh well under 50 sec. The car cost over £30. 00 to build and develop. Auction starts at £21. 00.

I defy anybody to build a better more appropriately built car suitable for VSCC. 50 MC. and PWA 7 C events from scratch for less. Many new engine parts and other spares available seperately.
