Film and classic car buffs will be well aware of the iconic
movie 'Bullitt' staring Steve Mc Queen who plays an all guts cop
named Frank Bullitt. He and two other cops are assigned to what
seems like a normal case to watch a witness for 48 hours before he
goes to trial. All goes wrong when one officer and the witness are
injured before the trial. Bullitt vows to catch the hit men and the
mafia boss that hired them resulting in Steve Mc Queen. in a
Mustang. chasing the men in their R/T 440 Dodge Charger a chase
that ends with the Charger ploughing into a petrol station. What
happened to the cars after the filming? The Mustang. the Charger's
nemesis. survived the filming. was repaired. cleaned up. and later
sold for $2500. The Charger. with only 600 miles showing on the
odometer. was destroyed in the crash and fire.
Although the original film Charger was destroyed. we have on
offer today an opportunity to acquire a similar iconic R/T 440 for
those would be baddies and hit men. This rare matching numbers
Californian Charger R/T 440 boasts its original engine and still
bears its Californian black and gold plates. When found in the USA. br/>this 440 was blue with a black stripe and mechanically sound. A
decision was made to strip the car and refinish it in the colour of
the Bullitt car. After stripping the paintwork. the Charger was
found to be in remarkable condition with only a few small areas
requiring attention. The two stage paint finish was applied and has
a mirror finish. The panel work is sharp with excellent gaps. New
seat covers. headlining and carpets have also been added. To
finish. new Torque Thrust wheels and Goodrich tyres complement the
resplendent and imposing coachwork. This is a true muscle car that
not only looks the part but. upon starting the beast. the sound
truly reverberates right through to your insides!
Imported into the UK in 2007. the 440 comes with the State of
California Certificate of Title (stamped exported). with the
Customs Entry Advice confirming UK import duties paid. Until
recently. the 440 had been laid up for six years in a garage in
Berkshire however. since its resurrection it has undergone
re-commissioning works and there is some finishing required.
Importantly. this is a genuine 1968 Dodge R/T 440 Charger fitted
with the correct rotating front light covers and rear lights unique
for the year. A check of the 'fender tag' (chassis number) will
confirm that it is also a matching numbers car. The Dodge has
recently received an Mo T test certificate. UK registration document
and Historic status road fund licence.
With the vendor deciding to retire to his yacht. he has decided
to sell his land based toys resulting in the Dodge R/T 440 being
offered at this extraordinarily low estimate. This is surely an
opportunity not to be missed.
