TRIUMPH SPITFIRE LENHAM GT LE MANS HISTORIC CLASSIC RACE CAR 1965 UNIQUE

The first Lenham. a Sprite-based GT - was built by company founder Julian Booty in a small garage behind the Dog and Bear hotel in the village of Lenham. Kent. Very soon after finishing the car. Julian became interested in glass fibre technique. and enrolled on a course to gain a better knowledge of the material. which in turn led to him designing and producing glass fibre body parts. initially for Austin Healey Sprites. MG Midgets and later for Triumph Spitfires. Spitfires were enjoying considerable success in motorsport at the time – especially so with the Factory Team efforts at Le Mans - and so a full GT conversion was designed at Lenham to capitalise on this market. However. it appears that very few of these handsome conversions were ever sold by Lenham and the car offered today is considered by historic racing pundits to be unique. most probably the only 1965 Lenham Spitfire GT of its type running in historic racing today. A statement on the authorative website www. wwah. org comments:  “this is the only Triumph Spitfire that the Lenham Motor Co converted to Le Mans bodywork - very special”. This statement has also been endorsed by the official Lenham Motor Company.

This unique racer is fully race ready. During this car's recent comprehensive rebuild. its race engine has been built and developed by the well respected race engine specialists ‘Classic & Modern Engine Services' in Bracknell. ‘Moto-Build Racing' – a leading specialist in small-bore historic GT racers – has been responsible for the ongoing development and exacting race preparation of the car. which has also seen the fitting of a rebuilt race gearbox along with a full suspension rebuild. including an innovative revision of the rear suspension set up. thus creating a superb handling car. Such is the attention to detail carried out by this company that aspects such as the all-important cooling system have also been completely revised along with the fitting of a new ‘Ashley' race seat with a 6-point race harness plus a FIA-legal fire extinguisher system. An added bonus to the versatility of this racer is that it is also fully road registered and road legal.

This Lenham Spitfire GT has twice competed in the Fordwater Trophy at the Goodwood Revival meeting and due to the car's extreme rarity will no doubt be invited again to this prestigious. world-class event – along with requests to participate in many other premier historic events. It is also eligible for a host of premier U. K race series. such as Equipe GTS. Ecurie GTS. FISK International. CSCC 'Swinging '60s' plus it is now registered for the prestigious HRDC Series in 2013. In a feature article on the HRDC in Autosport (Sept 22nd 2011). Autosport's Ben Anderson commented after racing this car on Silverstone's GP circuit against many larger capacity cars: “I'm 26th at the end of the first lap. but greater aggression shaves 3-secs from my practice time and helps me come through the field. The car behaves brilliantly and my reward is 13th overall and ‘Driver of the Day' award”.
