Reluctant sale due to loss of garage space: a 1976 Triumph Stag Manual with Overdrive complete with full MOT; Chassis Number: LD417280; Engine Number: LF041720HE (original engine); finished in Tahiti Blue with a black interior. Also note: this car will definitely be tax exempt this coming year and may already be so. which is something I can confirm later when I chase up the car's original build date. Moreover. all its MOT certificates from 1986 are present. likewise all its tax discs dating back to 1986 (see photograph).

History

Three owners from new. with the first of which thus: 1976-1984; the second: 1984-2010; followed by myself for the past 6 years. The second owner carried out extensive restoration in the early 90's. which included new front wings and inner arches. sills and door skins. etc. In addition all of the front & rear suspension was stripped. reconditioned and repainted. Also. a new steering rack. power steering pump and pressure hoses were fitted along with a fully reconditioned differential. The engine was stripped and fitted with new main and bearing shells. then reassembled with a new oil and water pump. new timing chains and head gaskets. This was completed at 70. 00 miles and mileage now stands at 92. 00 and so it's reasonable to suppose that any problems would have surfaced by now. but since that time there have been no issues whatsoever. Also. a new radiator was fitted and the carburettors fully reconditioned with proper kits; a new master brake cylinder with copper brake pipes were also fitted. There's a large folder full of receipts. along with some photographs of the restoratation to substantiate the aforesaid work. In my keep. I've had the gearbox fully reconditioned along with a brand-new improved and modified clutch (purchased from James Paddock). thus it now has a lighter more modern feel. In addition. the cross shaft. fork and the associated clutch release bearing parts were replaced. which makes for a nice modern feeling clutch. The total bill for this work was £950 (original invoice available) and work itself was done by Worcester Classics. a firm specializing in the Triumph range. The clutch master and slave cylinder have also been replaced. In addition. I've fitted electronic ignition. reconditioned the distributor. balanced and tuned the carbs and fitted an £80 K&N air filter. and so the car runs and starts very well. pulling through the rev range without any hesitation. Other than that. there's just been some general maintenance for annual the MOT. for example fitting some new rear brake cylinders and a rear stainless steel big-bore exhaust.

Mechanical Condition

Apart from the starter motor & alternator. which work perfectly. everything seems to have been attended to. Importantly. the engine does not overheat and has never done so in my keep. Hence the temperature on the whole stays below the normal and never above. There are no untoward noises or smoke and the oil pressure is good: 15-20lbs at tick-over and 40lbs plus when running hot. The drive-train is equally good. mainly because both the gearbox and differential have been fully reconditioned. The overdrive works faultlessly. engaging in and out quickly and smoothly. The driver's electric window is a little slow and as expected there a few small rattles here and there. but nothing major. There is an ever so slight blow on the exhaust at one of the joints. but as such it's nothing serious and just needs a bit of resealing. Another relatively minor issue is the fact the boot spring mechanism has lost one of its small bolts. The boot still opens and shuts. sure. but it has to be done manually. Also. the ignition barrel contacts are a slightly worn. and so I've fixed this by putting the ignition on a separate dash switch. which works great because but the car still starts and locks with the key. And that's about it.

Body and Structure

On the whole the body is very firm. with all the panels in very good shape with no dents or accident damage. That said there are a few areas that will need some consideration. such as a few relatively small patches around the front screen rubber showing some rust bubbling. though nothing so bad it can't be easily sorted. Same goes for the rear arches. which are also showing some rust bubbling. but which in the past have had some remedial work done and are therefore reasonably solid indeed. As far as the paintwork goes (Tahiti Blue). you can of course view the pictures and see for yourself that the car looks very presentable. which it is. That said. closer inspection shows there's some scattered surface cracking and that here and there the paint is lifting. Also. it's probably fair to say the paintwork has evenly flattened. which means despite polishing it can still look somewhat dull. more so in some areas than others. Accordingly. you mustn't totally rely on just the pictures but should really see things in the flesh. so to speak. As I say the car is very presentable. but after closer inspection you'll very likely feel that it'd definitely benefit from a full respray. and so if you want to sort the aforesaid issues and improve its appearance then in my view you should maybe budget for getting the paintwork done at your convenience. The sills. floors. inner arches and chassis areas are very solid. There is no thick under seal hiding anything. and any inspection will show this to be a very solid car. There is evidence of welding here and there particularly. part of the boot floor and the passenger front chassis rigger. In my six years of ownership. I have only had to have a pea-sized hole welded. The car has past oil waxing receipts and has been used only in summer months and garaged all its life until very recently. so this would account for its well preserved structural condition.

Interior. soft-top and chrome work

Looks to be the original interior. so age-worn commensurate with a forty year old car. The wooden dash. however. is in excellent shape not showing any peeling with no cracks to the veneer and varnish. The passenger and rear seats in very good shape with no tears and not too much wear. That said the driver's seat is showing its 40 years of service; thus it's generally worn with the supporting latex somewhat deteriorated. even so it's still reasonably firm and comfortable. The woollen carpets are original. worn here and there. but sound. The door caps are in reasonable shape with no holes cut for additional speakers. All the gauges. switches and electrics work and it has even got its original BL Rover radio still fitted. The soft top is a slightly faded and has couple very tiny holes (see picture). nevertheless it doesn't leak and the rear window is very clear and still un-zips. With a little encouragement the frame goes up and down; basically it just needs a few bolts replacing and maybe some adjustment. Importantly. the two pivot bolts at the front corners are good working order: moving just as they should. There is no hard top due to only summer use. so I could never really see the point. though very good ones can be acquired for around £250-£350. There are no knocks or dents on the bumpers and on the whole the chrome work is very good and shiny. save the rear bumper. the centre section. and one corner piece which look like they'd benefit from re-chroming.

Summary

In conclusion. this is definitely a car with stacks of potential. Accordingly. spending some time and a relatively small amount money will very easily re-establish its former glory. no question. not forgetting that it is of course in full working order. very roadworthy. with a full MOT and no tax to pay. As far as any required work goes. such could be undertaken as a rolling project looking to complete in maybe a few months or so. And given that these cars are right now seriously undervalued then it goes without saying this would make a very good investment indeed. especially since it has had just a few owners with a relatively low mileage. Personally speaking: it's been a great pleasure to own and drive. I used it regularly during the summer months completing many round trips of several hundred miles without any problems whatsoever. Anyway. I've tried to give an honest accurate representation of this car. warts and all. but I'd strongly advise you to see for yourself or at least speak to me on the phone to clarify any details. I will of course provide as many photographs as possible which along with the description should be enough to go on. Also. just to point out I have the chrome trim to go around the windscreen rubber. which is in very good condition as well as the stainless steel oversills

Conditions of Sale

As you can see I have a 100% history on ebay and I am a firm believer in doing business in an honest and straightforward manner. I have tried to give a truly reflective and in depth description but you must decide if this is the car for you. you are most welcome to view the car by arrangement. if you bid without viewing that's fine by me because I have done that in the past myself but you must also honour the deal and go through with it regardless on that basis. The car will only be sold via ebay and I will let it run to the very end. so it will NOT be sold early at any price. I believe this gives everyone who has shown an interest in the car a clear and fair opportunity to bid and hopefully win the car. I have NOT advertised it elsewhere. Any questions please feel free to ask via ebay. If you have 10 or less feedback ratings would you please make contact via ebay to advise me of your intentions before bidding. I would like the winning bidder to at least contact me within 24 hours of the finish date to discuss payment and collection details. I would prefer the car to be collected within seven days of the sale end. Winning bidder to pay £100 non-refundable deposit via Paypal within 1 hour of the auction end. This request is purely to deter the day-trippers. hagglers. re-negotiators and winning bidders who feel by their winning of the auction just puts them in the privileged position of having first refusal with the option to buy. This car is here to be viewed and encouraged to be viewed. so if you choose not to. and you win the auction. then the car has been bought as if been viewed. By that I mean non-disclosure of a missing wheel nut. a bulb out. will not be accepted as a reason for non-payment as the option was always there for you to view beforehand and it is impossible to list every single minor point on cars of these ages. no matter how honest I am. Obviously a huge apology goes out to all you genuine e-Bayers who appreciate. understand and follow the correct ethics of the auction. but as like me I`m sure you`ve had similar frustrations and fully understand the need for my conditions.
