Description:

Launched in 1951 at Earl's Court as the "New Austin Seven". the A30 was Austin's small family saloon designed to compete against Morris' new Minor. It cost £507 when new. undercutting the Minor by £62! Designed by T. K. Garrett; an Aeronautical engineer before joining Austin. the A30 used a new monocoque construction making it lighter and stiffer than its counterparts. It was offered as a 4-door saloon to begin with. until the 2-door came out in 1953. joined by the van and 'Countryman' estate in 1954. and was powered by the famous 'A-Series' engine.

This cute little car. affectionately known as 'Miss Molly'. is a late A30 produced at the beginning of 1956; the revised A35 replaced the A30 later that year. It has only had 4 previous owners in it's 60 year lifespan. and was first registered in Ashford. Kent on 1st February. 1956. There is a large history file with the car. including old MoTs. receipts. a second set of keys. Esso lubrication chart and even the original first registration book complete with road tax stamps! At some point during its life; it has been upgraded with the larger 1. 98cc A-Series. replacing the original lethargic 803cc. This has ended up making it a very useable car that is willing and able to cope with modern traffic conditions and can nip about with ease.  It has also had a halogen headlamp conversion and flashing indicators added to complement the original trafficators.

The A-Series engine starts readily and runs well. ticking over with a smooth ‘burble' at the tailpipe. The controls may be small and spindly. but she is very easy to drive and will potter around comfortably at 50mph. or it will do 60 if you ask it to but she starts to run out of ‘legs' with its little wheels and low gearing. It will pull up to a stop nice and straight with the hydraulic front brakes and rod actuated rear brakes. however the front braking system will be rebuilt. including new cylinders. before sale. The ignition system was overhauled with new points and condenser. sparkplugs. leads. and coil. The vehicle has also been inspected through the very thorough ‘Classic Friendly' scheme by an approved garage. The car is tax and MoT exempt being pre-1960. however the ‘Classic Friendly' inspection is a lot more thorough. and a certificate is issued giving you and your insurer a peace of mind that it the car is fully roadworthy.

‘Miss Molly' is believed to be almost completely original (apart from the engine). with very good underside. interior and bodywork. The vehicle has been thoroughly undersealed by previous owners to keep corrosion at bay. including the engine compartment hence the shiny. ‘oily' look.  The paintwork is good; there is the odd chip and swirl mark here and there. but patina is to be expected on a car of this age! The only bubbling of mention is a small patch on the off side rear wheel arch. The interior is complete; with red carpet and red/maroon leather faced seating. There is an optional Smiths ‘round' heater in the cabin to help keep things warm in the colder months. All five wheels have been freshly blasted and powder coated in the closest match to ‘Corfe Grey' we could get. and are shod with a set of four new radial all-weather tyres (the spare is excellent).

The car's first owner was Mr Harold Barnett of Ashford. Kent stated in the Registration Book. along with all the licenses issued to the car until the book was discontinued in December 1967. The rest of the history file makes fascinating reading with all the old receipts and MoTs etc. All in all. this is a fantastic. well-loved little motor car that is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed. for day trips into the country on a weekend. classic car shows in the summer. or just to nip down to the shops to make a change!
