Morris Marina - General Lee lookalike for sale
Current customer rating: (725 votes ) based onYee Haw. A rare 1972 Mk1 Marina 1300 with delusions of grandeur. It's been painted up to look like the General Lee but without the 383cu engine. it's got the fearsome. snorting 1. 3 “A series”. This is a pretty famous car and featured in several Practical Classics shoots around 2004. These are on the display board shown in the photos which comes with the car
As well as the paint job and graphics. “The General” is fitted with a full roll cage (though I wouldn't try rolling it if I were you). rear window louvre. front splitter. replica alloys wheels. alloy steering wheel. CB radio (non working) and. of course. the “Dixie” horn. Oh and the badge on the radiator grill tells us that "The South Will Rise Again". On a Marina. I this presumably means Eastbourne
I bought the car in July 2012 and this was the part of the eBay advert relating to new bits:
The car is fitted with a brand new a+ engine along with new starter. new dynamo. new starter solenoid. new fuel pump. new distributor. new leads. new radiator. new shocks. new pads and discs. new calipers. new battery. ew propshaft. full new exhaust and all fittings. all mounts and removable metal work cleaned and zinc coated. full underbody freshly undersealed new front seat front spoiler and a set of new number plates. Also engine bay fully repainted and all wiring re wrapped.
Since then I've done 3000 miles over the winter and found it extremely reliable. You could happily drive it home and in fact when I bought it. I drove it the 360 miles from Glasgow to Hertfordshire without a single problem.
11 months Tax & MOT (Tax exempt. of course)
So bad news first – Here's a pretty exhaustive list of the bad bits:
· When I got the car. some little darlings had forced the boot lock. I've straightened it all out and fitted a new Mk2 lock but as you can see from the photo. the damage is still evident. However. the car comes with a new boot which would just need spraying to match
· It smokes a little. It doesn't use much oil and the compression is fine on all cylinders which suggests valve stem oil seals. Not a particularly hard job on an “A series” engine
· The driver's side outer sill will need replacing at some point in the future. It passed an MOT this year but this was mentioned as an “advisory”. Spare outer sills for both sides are supplied
· There are two areas of rust beneath the rear window. This is a consequence of being driven all through the winter and I'm not good enough at body work to have attempted a repair
· The paint on the front wings has reacted in a few places. It was like it when I bought it so it isn't a recent or ongoing issue. I guess it happened immediately on painting. Anyway. its not noticeable at a distance or even in the photographs but better to mention it
Good Bits - Here's a list of brand new bits I've added since I've owned it
Clutch plate. release bearing. slave cylinder master cylinder. spigot bearing. hydraulic pipe
Prop shaft centre bearing & UJs
Rebuilt gearbox
Halogen headlamps. new bowls & adjusters
Electronic indicator relay
Rear wheel cylinder and flexible hoses
Washer bottle and pump
Track rod ends and steering rack gaiters
Rear tyres
Boot lock
Speedo cable
It also comes with a boot-full of spares including outer sills. various panels. boot lid. radiator grill. 1. 8 gearbox. voltage control boxes. brake drums. electronic distributor. spare clocks. dynamo rebuild kit and loads more small bits
So it's reliable. drives nicely (for a Marina!) and is eye-catching to say the least. It's not a concours car by any means but a usable classic which is fun to drive and to be seen in. I'm reluctantly selling it because I don't have a garage and with Marinas being so rare. it's not fair on this 40 year old survivor to put it through another winter
