DESCRIPTION

Mercury was founded in 1937 by Edsel Ford as a bridge between the top-end Fords and the base Lincolns of the time.

It was a brand that arguably struggled with an identity during its primitive years but ultimately came into stride after the war.

Introduced in 1939. the Mercury 8 started life with a flathead and really came into its own with the release of the third generation in 1949.

As the first post-war Mercury. it came out swinging with a larger 255 ci flathead V 8 and unique styling that better differentiated it from its Ford roots.

This new integrated fender “ponton” design helped Mercury break sales records in 1949.

The 49-51 Mercurys were so cool that they were immediately hot-rodded Sam Barris was the first in 1949 and many would later emulate his style with these lead sleds by chopping roofs. frenching headlights and painting the cars with flames and other extravagant colors.

Today. it is very difficult to find a nice. uncut original '49-51 Mercury.

We are very excited to offer this 1951 Mercury 6-passenger coupe! Finished in its original shade of 01 – Black with 60 – Tan Cloth. this coupe survives with a very factory appearance. with only mild cosmetic variances! In addition to the long list of standard features. this car has the following dealer-installed accessories: 2-way rearview mirror. side view mirror. vanity mirror. custom steering wheel. spotlights. automatic windshield washers. fender skirts. fuel door guard. tripod jack and oil filter! Under the hood. the car retains a correct 255 ci flathead V 8 bored . 060 over to 274 ci.

The car is equipped with a 3-speed manual transmission on the column! In addition. the car has Ertel 4-ring cast aluminum piston. balanced Scat H-beam rods. balanced 4” stroke crankshaft. ¾ cam. Paul Samarin aluminum big boy heads. Vertex magneto. Look distributor. Edelbrock aluminum intake. 450 cfm Holley carb. ARC air cleaner. Power Master XS starter. and Fenton cast headers with KKOA side exhaust cut-outs.

Furthermore. the car has been converted to 12 V and fitted with a March serpentine pulley system and Vintage Air and heat.

Aftermarket accessories on the car include piston-styled lighter. door locks and valve stem caps. seat belts. Stewart Warner oil pressure and water temperature gauges and an Equus pro tachometer mounted on the steering column.

The car rides on 235/75 R 15 Goodyear Custom Super Cushion wide whitewall radial tires with full wheel covers.

This 1951 Mercury presents a unique opportunity to own a 1951 coupe with a stock roofline and minor period-correct performance modifications.

The car runs great and has a wicked sound. especially with the cut-outs open! It was professionally repainted at some point and shows only minor wear from regular use and enjoyment.

The interior is new tan broadcloth reupholstered with a period correctness. but all new to this car.

The spare tire is in the trunk and the original owner's manual is included inside the glove box. with the original owner's mileage checkpoints proudly written on the cover.

We would be more than happy to answer any additional questions on the car or schedule a viewing! Thanks for looking!
