1966 Pontiac GTO

History

The Pontiac GTO is an American automobile built by Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1964 to 1974. It was a muscle car classic of the 1960 s and 1970 s.

In early 1963. General Motors' management issued a ban on involvement in auto racing. At the time. Pontiac's advertising and marketing approach was heavily based on performance. and racing was an important component of that strategy. With GM's ban on factory-sponsored racing. Pontiac's young and visionary management turned its attention to emphasizing street performance. The GTO was basically a violation of GM policy. but since the GTO was an option package and not standard equipment. it fell into a loophole in the policy.

Pontiac 's intermediate line was restyled again for 1966. gaining more curvaceous styling with kicked-up rear fender lines for a "Coke-bottle" look. and a slightly "tunneled" backlight. The tail light featured a rare louvered cover. only seen on the GTO. The GTO became a separate model series. rather than an optional performance package. with unique grille and tail lights. available as a pillared sports coupe. a hardtop. or a convertible

This is a true GTO. not a clone! The car came to us out of Kentucky. The previous owner had the car for a little less than a year. We were told the car has 66. xx original miles. It had a total frame-off restoration 6 years ago and retains all of its original metal. The previous owner sold the car because he needed money to finish restoring his 1978 Pontiac Firebird.
