This HY van has been converted with independent camping in mind whether visiting classic vehicle or club events or in the wild whilst also taking advantage of mains electrics when on camp sites.

1971 (tax exempt) HY van was originally built on a horse box chassis by Theault - the Rolls Royce of horse box builders. It has been converted to a motor caravan. registered with the DVLA as an Historic Vehicle and Motor Caravan.

It sleeps 2 in comfort but could sleep 4.

There is a vast over cab space accommodating everything you could possibly need or a bed. It measures 1 m by 2 m.

It is built with comfort and compactness in mind. with in-built bathroom and Triton domestic type shower. Thetford flushing toilet and Propex Malaga water heater running on gas and /or 230 volts and pressurised water system fed by Shurflo pump and expansion vessel from a 70 litre on-board tank. The tank can be filled by a hose (included) or by a Whale external pump (included) from an Aquaroll (also included).

A refillable 11 kg Gaslow cylinder (much cheaper to fill than bottles) has been installed which supplies the fridge. 4-burner hob. grill. water heater and hot water system when off the mains. When running. fridge is on 12 volts and when connected to external 230 volt source fridge is thus supplied.

The Thetford CS 200 flush toilet doesn't need those expensive smelly chemicals as it is ventilated using the SOG system (used by Hymer and other extortionately expensive German motorhome builders). It flushes from water from the on-board tank. The shower is a domestic type with thermostatic temperature control high enough so that 6 footers don't have to stoop.

The space heater is a gas-powered Propex HS 2000. thermostatically controlled and can be used when running. It heats the living area and the bathroom. Who wants a cold bathroom?

Lighting is 12 v LEDs or 230 volt and there is a 100 amp/hour deep cycle battery which when on hook-up is automatically replenished by a CTEC charger/reconditioner. and when running by the alternator. The hob is ventilated to the outside by an extractor fan with LED down lights.

There are 2 central LED lighting units with 2-way switches for when you are in bed plus 2 spot lights. A central 230 volt light is provided with two 230 volt strip lights and a LED strip light in the bathroom. A domestic consumer unit protects you and the 230 volts circuits and there are fuses for the 12 volt circuits.

Ventilation is provided by the rear window. two high side windows. two roof vents: one above the bathroom one above the living area.

There is an external tv socket to which the Avtex aerial is connected plus amplifier. Freeview and Avtex receiver.

The flushing toilet is fed by the on-board water tank which also supplies the bathroom sink. shower and main sink.

There are 4

12 volt sockets for ancillaries (plus 2 up front for Tom Tom) and 9

230 v sockets.

The great dread of camping namely wet towels is dealt with a heated towel rail and the other dread of condensation dripping down by insulation throughout plus a boarded roof and a raised internal floor through which all services pass. No more cold feet when you get out of bed.

To enjoy the warmer summer weather which is promised in 2013 an external BBQ gas point is provided. Charcoal BBQs are banned on most French camp sites now. There is an Easi Canopi to give the necessary shade when sleeping off lunch-time excesses.

Mechanically the vehicle is in superb condition with a reconditioned engine. which has covered only about 7. 00 miles. completely renewed braking system and clutch. 5 nearly new tyres and tubes and a new radiator. It should run for miles and miles with only basic servicing. This work was carried out by the H Van expert Jeff Winterman. Classic car insurance through Adrian Flux is very cheap.

As it is left hand drive with a largely enclosed rear a colour three camera system has been installed covering left and right-hand blind spots. and a great rear view. giving a vast improvement over the external mirrors.

The dimensions are 4. 85 m long including rear mounted spare wheel. (Yes all this in 4. 85 m!) 2. 05 m wide and 2. 75 m high. There are tethering points each side which are useful for dogs or children.

A few modifications have been done such as an effective cab heating system as the standard H system is all but useless and the sides and rear of the van have been “wooded” for effect and for further insulation.

Mechanical spare parts for these vehicles are easily available. Because the vans are mechanically simple. and computer free they are generally reliable and easily owner maintained.

It has just passed its Mo T with no advisories and the new expiry date is 5 th May 2014.

The vehicle is registered with the DVLA as a Motor Caravan and an Historic Vehicle.
