I found this 1972 Cutlass Supreme holiday hardtop in Meriden. CT two summers ago. It had low miles (69. 00) and the right look—straight. original steel with a terrific new green metallic paint job. and American Racing AR23 alloy wheels. The previous owner had picked it because of the integrity of the frame and panels. and had spent big. obvious dollars on paint and chrome and a bottom-end rebuild of the non-original 1974 Olds 350 block. He ran out of money and spousal dispensation. and put it up for sale with a list of items to complete for it to be roadworthy. I paid $8. 00 for it. and another $50 to the seller to bring it down to Bridgeport on his trailer.
The car has essentially been rebuilt from the skin in since. with more than $10. 00 in receipts. First. Janetty Racing in Waterbury redid the upper and lower control arms. wheel bearings and brakes. went through the power steering and four-barrel carb and added a set of SunPro volt. temperature and oil pressure gauges under the dash. I also replaced the fuel tank. lines. radiator. fan. starter motor. alternator and front and rear shocks and springs. Last summer. Fairfield Automatic Transmission rebuilt the original Turbo-Hydramatic 350 and added a TransGo shift kit. I added Flowmaster 50 Series mufflers. which sound great combined with the shorty headers the previous owner put on. The only unfinished business under the hood is the air conditioning. It's an original AC car. but the compressor was removed long ago.
Last year. I also had the interior completely redone at Custom Interior and Audio in Danbury. with high-quality reproduction leather seat covers. door panels and carpet from Olds specialists Fusick Automotive Products. They cut out some soft spots in the floor and welded in replacement metal. and moved the seat track back a few inches for more legroom. I pulled out the crusty replacement tape deck and put in a Kenwood KDC-248U head unit with Bluetooth and USB connectivity. to play and power an iPhone. And last week. Fairfield Automotive tuned it up and replaced the brake booster. choke assembly and power window regulator. and it runs fantastic. I stored it from November until May and it didn't leak a drop of oil or fluid. and it fires up easily with a turn or two of the key. As is. it is perfect for reliable summer cruising—or you can pull the 350 and transplant an aluminum-head 455 to make it a pavement pounder. I'll be sorry to see it go. but I ran across a 1972 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 4. 5—a sentimental favorite that reminds me of my late grandfather.
The car is being sold as-is. The body and mechanicals are in terrific shape. but it is a 41-year-old car. If I kept it. I would replace the condenser for the air conditioning unit. the faded and cracking trim at the base of the inside of the rear window and the thin trim surround on the dashboard. All of those parts are readily available. I would also sand the leading edge of the C-pillars and paint them satin black. That was the one unfinished element to an otherwise terrific repaint. The sheet metal. frame and undercarriage are rust free and straight.   A book of receipts and a custom cover come with the car. I'm happy to take any extra pictures or make the car available for inspection by your mechanic. You're also welcome to talk to mine about it. It's solid—and a lot of car for the money. I have garage space to store the car until July 1. and I'm happy to work with a shipper. The Cutlass won't leave until all funds clear. Thanks for looking.
