Built from 1969-1971. the Checker Medi Car was intended to accommodate the needs of those in wheelchairs or even patients on stretcher gurneys. With a roof elevated by eight inches. a rear door that swung open nearly 180 degrees and a deploy-able ramp. the Medi Car could transport up to three passengers in wheelchairs. or one gurney and one wheelchair. Aimed at the medical transportation market. the cars could also be used by taxi companies looking to expand the services offered by their fleets. In three years of construction. less than 100 examples were built. with the bulk being sold to nursing homes and private individuals.
Inside. this 1970 Medicar has been transformed into a beautiful limousine. modified with touches like Birdseye maple dash trim. black ostrich leather upholstery. Versace-influenced door panels. a rear-compartment bar with crystal champagne flutes. and a sophisticated audio/video entertainment system (that occupies a significant portion of the once-cavernous trunk). The 350-cu. in. V-8 engine has been converted to run on propane.
