Up for auction and selling NO RESERVE is this 1961 Lincoln Continental Convertible. This is a highly desirable and very rare collector Lincoln 4 Door Suicide Door Convertible and with only 2857 ever produced in 1961 it is a real fantastic opportunity to own a true American Classic.
This generation of Continental is favored by collectors world wide and has appeared in many motion pictures. such as Goldfinger. nbsp;The Matrix. Last Action Hero. nbsp;Kalifornia. nbsp;Spider-Man 2. nbsp;Hit and run. nbsp;Animal House. and the Inspector Gadget films.
It has also appeared in the television series Pushing Daisies. in the opening sequence of the television series Entourage. and as the vehicle of choice for Michael Chiklis's character Vincent Savino in the series Vegas.
Ford produced several concept cars which recalled this design.
Not to mention it is the same model year as the infamous President JFK limo.
Ford Motor Company assembled that car at its Lincoln plant in Wixom. Michigan in January 1961.
Hess & Eisenhardt of Cincinnati. Ohio was responsible for customizing the car to function as a presidential parade limousine.
The car. as equipped at the Lincoln plant. would have retailed for $7. 47.
Custom built. the car cost nearly $200. 00!

Other than one repaint approximately 12 years ago it is virtually completely original! The factory 430 CID V8 still runs out strong and the the car cruises along with nice power through the smooth shifting factory Dual Range Automatic Transmission. Finished in its factory "M" Code Sultana White exterior and beautifully complimented with its factory and rare optioned "87" code interior which is really in exceptional conditional considering its age. this car turns heads and is ready for a new home.

1961 Lincoln Continental Convertible.

In 1961. the Continental was completely redesigned by Elwood Engel. For the first time. the names Lincoln and Continental would be paired together outside the Mark Series; along with replacing the Continental Mark V. the 1961 Continental replaced the Lincoln Capri and Premiere. consolidating Lincoln into a single product line. Originally intended to be the 1961 Ford Thunderbird. the design was enlarged and slightly altered before being switched to the Lincoln line by Robert McNamara. One of the most striking features of the new Continental was its size. It was 14. 8 in (380 mm) shorter than its predecessor. So much smaller was this car. that advertising executives at Ford photographed a woman parallel parking a sedan for a magazine spread. The new Continental's most recognized trademark. front-opening rear "suicide doors". was a purely practical decision. The new Continental rode on a wheelbase of 123 inches (3. 00 mm). and the doors were hinged from the rear to ease ingress and egress. When the Lincoln engineers were examining the back seats that styling had made up. the engineers kept hitting the rear doors with their feet. Hinging the doors from the rear solved the problem. The doors were to become the best-known feature of 1960s Lincolns. The world's only production 4-door convertible model at the time. and representative of Lincoln's classic new look. trim new size. and award-winning styling that put the styling departments at the competition on alert!
Lowering the top required only pulling on a T-handle control while sitting in the driver's seat.
The deck lid. hinged at the rear. unlocked itself. opened. an extension panel tucked in under the deck lid rotated up to extend the length of the rear deck. the top unlatched itself from the windshield. stored itself in the luggage compartment. and the deck lid closed and locked itself.
The entire process took about a minute from start to finish!

Retro California Blue plates come with the vehicle from Dealer Jim Glaze Lincoln Mercury in Redlands. California
This Lincoln was produced later in the assembly run on May 9th. 1961
Only 2. 57 Convertibles were produced in 1961 making this a very rare and valuable edition.
Odometer reads 74. 04 but actual mileage is unknown
Repainted once about 12 years ago in its original code "M" Sultana White body color.
The Exterior paint is presentable one might say driver quality . with the typical minor blemishes and touchups one would expect.
The Exterior chrome. stainless. trim and emblems are all in place and really extremely nice with a good shine and no dents or damage other than a slight ding on the corner of the rear drivers side bumper and a scrape on the lower passenger side rocker molding.
The Interior appears to be all original from what we can determine. in its correct code "87" Turquoise Leather.
The interior is really quite exceptional given its age and really there are no serious deficiencies anywhere other than some of the windlace which is fraying and remains of some adhesive which was used to attach a cloth dash cover. The dash is in great shape by the way without a crack. his care and concern to keep it covered preserved it from the desert heat.
Still has its original 430 CID V8 Engine mated to the Dual Range Automatic Transmission and 2. 89:1 Rearend
The tires are older BF Goodrich Silvertown Wide Whites and appear period correct.
The Power Top operates very nicely sometimes requiring a slight hand assist and the soft top is very presentable. the rear window on the passenger side is a little loose.
All 4 Power Windows all go up and down effortlessly.
Air Conditioning might have been a dealer installed system. we are not certain.
There is an after market radio in it currently but the original radio comes in a box with the car as shown in the photos.
The Chassis is very nice and clean with no evidence of any significant corrosion.
The Engine Compartment is nice and tidy showing pride of ownership and maintenance.
It still has some of the original engine compartment decals in place.
This Lincoln drives quiet. soft and smooth with plenty of power and handles beautifully.
