Buick resuscitated its top-line Limited series, using the C-body platform. The Limited was Buick's flagship limousine between 1936 and 1942 and, during model year 1958 during GM's Fiftieth Anniversary, the halo car for Buick. This low production example is one of only 5,571 Limited Rivieras made in 1958. The 1958 Buick Limited was loaded with options such as flight Pitch Dynaflow, "Lucite" paint, Dual Exhausts, Quadrajet Carburetor, Safety Power Steering, Automatic Windshield Washer, Wide-Angle Windshield Wipers, Back-up lights, Glareproof rearview mirror, Safety-Buzzer, Parking Brake Warning Light, Electric Clock, DeLuxe Wheel Covers, DoubIe-Depth Foam Rubber Seat Cushions, foam-backed Carpeting, Safety Instrument Panel Cover, Direction Signals, Dial Map Lights, Dual Sunshades, Cigarette lighters, Automatic Glove Compartment Light, Dual horns, Oil Filter - Full-Flow Design, Intake silencer and heavy-duty Dry-type air cleaner with disposable filter. StepOn self-locking parking brake, Gas-Filler Door in center of rear bumper, Anti-rust fuel line system, Heavy insulation against heat and sound, Horizontal Redliner Speedometer, Trip-Mileage Indicator, Dual Vista-Vision Headlights. Electrically operated windows plus outside rearview mirror. Aluminum air-cooled brake drums. Power Brakes and 6-way power front seat. Safety Plate Glass in every window. Dressed in correct Carlsbad Black (code AA), this bruiser has great paint and trim, the body is straight and the front and rear chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body. However, is a small blemish at the passenger side front corner. This example was made in Buick's Flint, Michigan factory. The engine bay is very tidy and the battery is new. This car rides on American Classic radials, size 235/75R15 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted to a steel wheel topped by a factory wheel cover. The tires and wheel covers are all in very good order. The car also has air-cooled aluminum brakes and Miracle Ride plus a 127.5-inch wheelbase. Under the hood is a 364 CID Nailhead V-8 engine (code B-12000) married to a Flight Pitch Dynaflow two-speed automatic transmission. Driver convenience features were not sparse – air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows, six-way power front seat and Autronic Eye headlight dimmer. The Dynaflow had an infinite-pitch stator plus a third turbine to add efficiency. There are the following range positions: P-Park, R-Reverse, N-Neutral, D-Drive and G-Grade. The G range should be used for downhill driving when engine braking is desired or required. Car will not accelerate while in this range. Inside, the black nylon cloth and silver leather interior (code 721) is in overall very good order. The front and rear bench (with fold-down center armrest) seats look great, as does the carpeting. The neutral headliner is in satisfactory order while the factory three-spoke steering wheel looks good. The dashboard and inner door panels echo the condition of the seats. A column-mounted shift lever and a factory Sonamatic AM radio complete the interior but the fuel gauge is inoperable. The Buick Limited series was revived in 1958 as the ultimate Buick for the model year, using the GM C platform. In a model year where General Motors's answer to Chrysler's “Forward Look” was to update its 1957 Buicks and Oldsmobiles by slathering them in excessive amounts of chrome, the 1958 Buicks received the ultimate treatment. Limiteds received a Fashion-Aire Dynastar grille, cast of 160 chrome squares, each, according to Buick PR pieces, “shaped in a design to maximize the amount of reflective light.” Buick added quad headlights and three emblems bearing a stylized “V,” one a medallion on the hood and the other two as gun-sight fender-toppers. The Buick “Sweepspear” side trim, a styling hallmark since 1949, was joined by broad chrome panels attached to the rear quarter panels. Taillights were housed in massive chrome housings; each trunk lid received a chrome grip in the center. Each Buick Special, Century, Super and Roadmaster received a Fashion-Aire Dynastar grille, cast of 160 chrome squares, each, according to Buick advertising “shaped in a design to maximize the amount of reflective light.” Buick also added quad headlights and three emblems bearing a stylized “V,” one a medallion on the hood and the other two as gun-sight fender-toppers. The Buick “Sweepspear” side trim, a styling hallmark since 1949, was joined by broad chrome panels attached to the rear quarter panels. Taillights were housed in massive chrome housings; each trunk lid received a chrome grip in the center. In comparison to the junior models in the Buick lineup, the Limited was slightly more restrained. Each Limited traded its chromed side panel trim for a body color-keyed insert decorated with 15 chevrons (three groups of five). The Limited also received its own rear tail treatment that traded the heavy chrome taillight housings for a wraparound taillight lens broken up by four chrome bands. Rear bumper “Dagmars” housed “Dual Jet” back-up lights. Power brakes were standard. Buick sold only 7,438 Limiteds, due in part to their price. Competition to this Buick in 1958 included Cadillac's Sedan de Ville, Chrysler's Saratoga, DeSoto's Fireflite, Mercury's Monterey, Oldsmobile's 98 Holiday and Packard's Sedan. If you're looking for a special cruiser to add to your collection or if you enjoy big post-war Buicks, this may be just the ticket for you!
