1988 Mercedes-Benz E-Class for sale
Current customer rating:
For Sale is my mother's Mercedes-Benz 260 E-Class (W 124). She has had this vehicle since 1988 and purchased it from Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown, New York. She can no longer drive and that is the reason for the sale. This vehicle was not only extremely well cared for but also loved by her! It breaks her heart to sell it. The car only has 66,976 documented miles on it and has been garaged its entire life. It has been regularly serviced by Mercedes with oil changes every 3,500 miles and has never been driven in the snow. The body has no rust and is in incredible shape. The interior is like new condition with virtually no wear on the seats or carpet. Everyone that has seen the car can't believe it's condition. Everything works on the car including all the gauges and air conditioning. Tires still have very good tread on them. The car has never been in a car wash and was only hand washed its entire life. All it really needs is a new owner! Here's what Gear Patrol wrote about this model: "Here's the thing about this most anonymous and ubiquitous of Mercedes-Benzes: it's one of the best cars the German brand has ever made. The W 124 was one of the most aerodynamically advanced vehicles of its time. The early '80 s were a different time at Mercedes. BMW and Audi weren't the luxury competitors they are now, and Lexus did not exist. Mercedes produced cars with a much longer shelf life than most new vehicles today, and people paid handsomely for the privilege – a Mercedes 260 E in 1986 retailed for the modern equivalent of more than $80,000. As such, Mercedes could afford to let their engineers go hog-wild building the ultimate sedan with the W 124…and they did. W 124 s, if well-maintained, have been known to last pretty much forever. One-million-mile cars? W 124 diesels have lasted for more than two million. If you find the details of a W 124's demise on a message board, it's likelier to be an accident and insurance write off than a fatal flaw with the car".I'm sure you are aware that this model was used extensively in Europe as a taxi because of its quality and reputation. You just can't kill it. Also, this vehicle had many firsts in the industry like standard Air bags and ABS braking. Some main innovations of the W 124 series were related to occupant safety. Derived from the Mercedes W 201, with which the W 124 shares the basic layout, its similarly angular body was designed to withstand an offset-crash in a concrete barrier at some 35 mph (56 km/h) without serious harm to the occupants and a largely undamaged passenger cabin, a windshield that stays in place and doors easily opened without special recovery tools. This crash-test configuration became the base for the Euro-NCAP procedure currently being the standard crash-test configuration in the EU. Unlike Euro-NCAP, Mercedes required the body of the W 124 to withstand an offset impact from the front and from the rear. The W 124 also featured a driver's side airbag (optional in Europe, standard in the US from launch), height-adjustable seat belts with electronic-mechanical pre-tensioners (standard) for both front passengers, rear seat belts which automatically adapted to the size of the passengers (standard), pedals that were moved inversely in a frontal impact (away from the drivers feet and in the direction of the bulkhead separating the cabin from the engine) and door arm rests with deformable elements designed to reduce abdominal injury risk resulting from a side impact. The dashboard made of impact-absorbing, artificial foam was reinforced with a thin aluminum layer which effectively prevented hoses, valves, housings and other components from heating and engine from penetrating through the dashboard inside the passenger cabin in a severe impact. The passenger glove box also featured a defined point of rupture, which considerably reduced the probability of front passenger injuries.Following the Mercedes W 201, the W 124 was the second serially manufactured car in history to see widespread use of lightweight high-strength steels, which today are a standard in car design.
