Please note that experience shows us that the photobucket of over 100 large pixel pictures posted here are in most cases best viewed and downloaded using the very latest and most updated version of the 'Firefox' browser as some other browsers and especially older browser versions are not capable of accommodating the size of the download. Over the years our clients have overwhelmingly been appreciative of our many unaltered large pixel photos posted in our ads and our feedback has been that it is very rare that a seller will post all but the most flattering of photographs. We prefer to expose the complete roll of film taken of the car. in sometimes unflattering but natural sunlight. in order for our prospective buyers to be able to see true and reliable images of the car advertised and that is the reason for some seemingly duplicated shots. We trust you will agree.
West Coast Classics are
proud to present an absolutely exceptional example of this rare 1974 BMW 3. 0 CSi 5 speed manual Coupe an always garaged since imported to southern California in 1985 example of the iconic series 6 cylinder 3. 0 CSi
model. a rare and highly desirable internationally collectible BMW in a most desirable original 'Garnet Red' (color code 025) factory color paint with a beautiful black vinyl interior and one of only 579 built in 1974 and one of only 7. 35 in total during its 1971-75 production year period!
The BMW 2800/3. 0 CS series. known internally as the BMW E 9. was an extremely handsome and elegant two-door coupe built for BMW by Karmann from 1968 to 1975. with BMW's trademark 'shark nose' at the front and unusual rear lights mounted on a smart cigar shaped body and with a light and airy interior thanks to its pillarless look with lots of glass. The 2800 CS was replaced by the 3. 0 CS and 3. 0 CSi in 1971. It was a brilliant evolution from the Hofmeister styled 4 cylinder BMW 2000 CS coupe. which was enlarged to hold the powerful and extremely refined BMW M 30 straight 6 engine. used in the E 3 sedan and with fuel injection boosting performance still further in late 1972. giving the car the ability to accelerate as quickly as its smaller rival. the Porsche 911. The car had a new and longer front end to accommodate the
large six cylinder engine and the model was also celebrated as the ultimate superb European high speed grand touring car.
The model was absolutely beautiful with a neat four lamp face headlight section. bodies still supplied by Karmann and beautifully trimmed with typical German high quality materials including a wooden dashboard and bucket seats. a revised independent front suspension with Mac Pherson front struts and a trailing arm rear plus anti-roll bars both ends this car was indeed quite simply a work of art. The 3. 0 CSi straight six cylinder engine used a single overhead cam and Bosch fuel injection to get 200 bhp. The dramatic and stunning aerodynamics for a modern day sports car was where where the car scored best with the E 9 platform. never more so than with the 3. 0 CSL homologation special. with its legendary light weight aluminum body panels instead of steel. which helped prove very successful in racing. especially in European Touring Car Championship and the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft. This helped to establish BMW's status as a sporty driver's car.
The engine had been bored out to give a displacement of 2. 86 cc and was offered with a 9. 0:1 compression ratio. twin carburettors with 180 HP at 6000 revolutions per minute in the 3. 0 CS or a 9. 5:1 compression ratio. Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection. with 200 HP at 5500 revolutions per minute in the 3. 0 CSi. Along with the legendary BMW 507. the BMW 2002 Turbo. the 3. 0 CSL (with the L short for
'Leightmetall') and the more radical 3. 2 L CSL with nearly 400 bhp and nicknamed 'the Batmobile' due to its enormous fenders. huge rear
spoiler and wind deflectors mounted on its hood this is one of the most iconic classic early year BMW's ever built and certainly one of the best looking cars of its generation!
This particular model is finished in its original and beautiful factory color combination of 'Garnet Red' exterior paint with a black interior. all of which is in quite exceptional and mostly all original condition. apart from one repaint! There are no signs of any major accidents or previous rust! An obviously always babied
and pampered example if there ever was one which had been owned for many years by one proud California owner before we recently purchased the car from his estate. The cars older repaint in its original 'Garnet Red' color is still in quite beautiful condition with only very minor imperfections noticeable only upon close inspection. The black interior
is also in beautiful condition with virtually no signs of any major
wear!
The car drives exactly like a well maintained model should and must be seen and driven to be truly appreciated! The BMW M 30 straight six engine was used over a 28 year period and is rated as one of the "Top engines of the 20 th century" according to 'Ward's Autoworld Magazine' which has covered the automotive industry for over 80 years and which publishes an annual list of the ten best automobile engines available. It was used to power a series of BMW E 9 and E 24 coupes to European Tour Championships throughout the 1970's and well into the 1980's. Please note that this particular car has an upgraded 3. 5 litre fuel injected late model M 30 engine
from either a M 30 B 34/B 35 car (1982-93) which was used in the 635 CSi 735 i and M 535 i models and which is an extremely strong and powerful engine and which when mated to the five speed manual transmission makes for a simply phenomenal sports car driving experience!
You will surely look long and hard to find a finer example of this exceptionally clean and cherished and very rare and internationally desirable 1974 BMW 3. 0 CSi with an upgraded late model M 30 3. 5 engine mated to a 5 spd manual transmission for the ultimate time warp driving experience in this most desirable of color combinations!
