1976 Jaguar XJ6L Sedan

The Jaguar XJ series began in 1968 and has continued in various forms and Series into modern times. The first Mark was introduced in 1968 and continued until 1992. During this time there were three series, Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3.For consignment, a 1976 version of the XJ6 however this car was made with a longer wheelbase which allowed the front door to expand by 4 inches. Hence easier access, and more interior room for all passengers. This car will need some TLC just so you are aware of this ahead of your purchase. An overall nicely preserved example which will require some refreshing to make it above par.

ExteriorLeading the way with the leaper which shows some pitting and beginnings of delamination of the chrome, it's ready to jump on to the chromed front grille surround. Also we see 4 round headlights flanking the expensive looking grille, along with a shiny bumper below with some rubber inserts. Nice wide trimmings surround the wheel wells which frame shiny chrome slotted wheels with dog dish wheel covers. Gaps are well minded with all the panels and trimmings around the passenger compartment. Just aft of the rear wheel well trimming, a long pointy wrap around bumper begins and continues across the rear vertical panel. Here taillights shaped like irons are on either corner along with a round reflector. Paint is silver (hi-OOOHHH!) and is showing some rust spotting where it has been chipped off, and slight dulling.

InteriorOpening the doors to climb inside we see these panels covered in red. These will need some work to tighten the panel coverings. Inside 2 wide cushy front low back buckets covered in aged leather show some cracking and revealing of the padding. This is especially true of the driver's seat. In the center a red leather covered padded console has a glove box/armrest, toggles for the power windows and the shifter lever. Looking at the passenger's seats, leather is showing some deep filling and a mysterious black stain showing up on the seat. This is also seen on the rear bench on the passengers side and drivers side rear seat, however this bench has no cracks or tears. As we move upward, climate controls are next to an AM/FM stereo. Just above is a clock and some more buttons and interior lighting switches. Lacquered burl showing striating and cracks in the finish provide the background for the dash front, and black faced Smiths gauges in round form are behind the original steering wheel which has several control stalks coming from the column. Red carpeting is flooding the floors, and above a cream headliner is sagging between the buttons holding it up.

DrivetrainUnder the hood in the unrestored engine bay is a 4.2 liter inline 6-cylinder engine with normal aspiration in the form of 2 SU carburetors entering from the side. On the back is a BW65 3-speed automatic and a 3.31 rear axle.

UndercarriageUp on the lift we immediately start seeing invasive rust areas of concern and that will need attention. Surface rust is on the lower rockers, and most floorpan surfaces and some suspension has been coated with a heavy layer of undercoating. Some invasive rust is also seen on these panels making its way through the heavy undercoating leading me to believe there is more to this rust than is initially seen. Coil spring suspension is upfront, and coil overs are on back. Power disc braking is on all 4 corners.

Drive-AbilityIt starts and drives just a bit rough possibly due to old fuel. The alternator is not charging and the A/C compressor is seized. The speedometer is sticking. As I went around the test track a few times, it did run better but will need a once over.

So a bit of a project car with classy Jaguar lines, more passenger room with the L chassis, and interior leather that will need some attention. I believe this car is suffering from sitting for a while and not being run regularly. It is priced to sell and will have room for all the TLC it may need to get it back to snuff. I see it much as my wife, if you ignore it, it is more difficult to deal with, but as it gets more attention it smoothes out nicely!!
