Its time for this old beauty to find a new home: the 1969 GMC Handi-Bus. A former emergency/maintenance vehicle for a regional airport, it is well-preserved for its age due to lack of use and salt exposure (airports use urea instead of salt). The engine was replaced with a rebuilt 250 a few years back and runs smooth and reliable (starts easily and oil stays clean). The only issue in the past several years was a brake line that blew (rear lines replaced). It is essentially a utility version of the Chevy G10 Sportvan and standard parts are typically easy to find. It runs regularly, with occasional 100+ mile trips. As this is an unrestored 50+ year old vehicle, there are many issues that need attention (selling AS-IS). To list a few: speedometer/odometer not working, wiper fluid tubes need replacement, brakes sometimes need to be pumped to hold a stop, one brake drum clunks when backing up, exterior body rust needs immediate attention, brake light switch needs repair, and most doors do not lock, and the light bar works (turns slowly) but needs a bulb replaced.Exterior:Body rust has been accelerating and needs attention.Paint is safety yellow over original orange.Light bar turns slowly (needs a new bulb).15' long, 6' high (without light bar)Tires in good condition, wheels balancedInterior:Wooden cabinets from its life as an airport vehicle were mostly removed (carpet left in place). This van was built for hauling 4'x8' sheets of plywood/drywall, and can easily hold 12' stock with doors closed. To the non-collector/restorer:Very little about this vehicle resembles the modern driving experience. It is essentially a steel box with minimal insulation or safety features (I installed seat belts). The manual transmission has 3 speeds (3 on the tree). Freeway speeds are not a problem but its not exactly aerodynamic (10-15 miles to the gallon). There is no air conditioning and since the engine is between the seats you'll have the windows rolled down in the summer. It does not stop quickly and you'll want to drive slow and defensively. There is no power steering, and turning the wheel at a stop is a serious workout. All of this contributes to the great joy of stepping into the past that I will miss dearly. Just about everyone you pass will smile and wave and make it all worth while.
