This 1986 Jeep Cherokee is an early XJ platform truck with the rare Renault turbodiesel option. A 5-speed example, it looks to be in excellent shape, and prior to the selling dealer, is said to have remained with one family from new. The seller adds that a bit more than half of its 133 k miles were picked up while being towed behind an RV, further noting that it runs like new and has cold factory A/C. Find it here on e Bay in Phoenix, Arizona with an $8,500 BIN.

It's getting difficult to find well kept XJ's, let alone as nice as this example appears to be. Gold paint shows very well, and really emphasizes the classic shape's unadorned good looks. Meaty tires, chunky OEM wheels and boxy flares give it a bit of visual heft, and this grille and headlight design is probably the best of several different variations used over the platform's unusually long 17 year production run. Fitted with a Class III hitch, pre-wired tow bar, and a driveshaft disconnect, it can still serve as a motorhome tender if needed.

The interior shows just as well, with very good upholstery and carpets. The seller says that everything works “like new,” adding that recently R 134 a converted A/C blows cold. Crank windows, manual locks, and a manual transmission suit the truck's no-nonsense personality, and the simple, thick-rimmed steering wheel is actually quite attractive. Apart from an aftermarket head unit and coin and cup holders, everything appears to be stock.

This Cherokee is powered by a 2.1 liter, SOHC, eight valve turbodiesel four designed and built by Renault. Rated at 85 HP and 132 lb. ft., power is routed through an Aisin-Warner 5-speed and onto a New Process NP 207 Command-Tractransfer case and Trac-Lock limited slip rear diff. These manually-engaged 4×4 trucks are generally preferable over NP 228/229 equipped examples. which utilized an unreliable vacuum actuated process to engage or disengage the front axle on the fly. The seller doesn't note too many specifics, but does to claim to have recently completed an 1,800 mile journey, during which the truck is said to have performed without fault while returning an impressive 34 MPG.

Many XJ enthusiasts prefer the final 1997-2001 model with the venerable AMC 4.0 liter straight-six and NP 231 transfer case, but this early truck is more interesting than most, combining the very rare (for the US, anyway) turbodiesel, ideal equipment, and apparently excellent condition under its handsome, curve-free exterior.
