For sale is my Mars Red 1984 mk2 Volkswagen Golf GTI 8v. I've owned the car for 14 years, and I'm the second owner, having purchased it from an elderly lady in Portsmouth who was selling because the unassisted steering had become too heavy for her.The car has covered just 74,000 miles from new, of which 27,000 miles have been covered under my ownership. The mileage is supported by a thick folder of invoices and service history that details the car's 37 year life.Being a B reg car, this was one of the very first mk2 Golfs registered in the UK and means it's got the distinctive and extremely rare red striped interior that was only available for the first 6 months after launch. Being so early, it also has some mk1 inspired features like the front quarter-lights with the wing mirrors mounted next to them, and the vinyl stripes down the side of the car.The car has been off the road and dry stored for around 7 years, during which time I wanted to bring it as close to as-new condition as I could, having replaced:4x shock absorbers4x tyresThe whole exhaust system4x discs and padsNew seals in all 4 brake calipers4x alloys refurbishedNew fuel pumpMany perishables in the engine bay replaced such as the all important vacuum lines that keep the Digifant injection system running correctly. The Digifant injection system was professionally serviced by a specialist. As a result the car is an absolute joy to drive and needs no work done before enjoying it. It'll be freshly serviced before selling and its MOT runs until the end of March 2022. Prior to being dry stored in 2014, when the car was still in regular use, it was taken off the road and dry stored each winter, meaning it hasn't been driven during winter since before 2010.The car is currently on a set of BBS RA alloys, however as part of the sale I'll include the 5 original Pirelli P-slot alloys it left the factory with. However these could do with a refurb and will need new tyres, however personally I'd keep the spare as-is, as its quite presentable and still has its original Pirelli P600 tyre.Condition of the car is extremely good. In 2007 I took the engine out to replace pumps / belts / gaskets / seals / hoses etc (all of which is thoroughly documented with invoices and pictures) and generally give things a clean and a tidy. Since then I've kept the engine bay nice and presentable. The interior has some signs of wear given it's a 37 year old cloth interior, however I would say it's still very very tidy. The drivers bolster is still in tact, the parcel shelf is in one piece, it's even still got the original head unit and dealers number plates. Where the paintwork is good, it's very good.Being so clearly well cared for, it draws a massive amount of attention so expect to have a chat at almost every petrol station with something fondly reminiscing about the one they or their dad used to own. That being said though, it does have some imperfections - pictures included - the new owner may wish to address. This includes some bubbling paint under the driver's side of the windscreen (which is the only corrosion anywhere on the car), and being a desirable car from the 80's means it has unfortunately been keyed along the front passenger wing and rear quarter. For me I think the key mark is part of the cars history though so this isn't something I've wanted to rectify.Finding these cars in an unmodified condition is extremely difficult now, let alone finding one with low mileage, and low owners. Given this also has some rare and distinctive features and is in a desirable and striking colour makes this a very special car. I've treasured the car the whole time I've owned it, and I love knowing things like:I hadn't been born for the first 3 years this car was around, but despite that it was still being parked at the same house from new until I was old enough to drive it away myself. It went to the same garage for its MOT nearly every year for almost 20 years and the same man that was testing it in the mid-80's was still testing it in the early 2000's.I'll miss this car immensely, but I don't have enough space to justify keeping it, so sadly it's time to pass it over to the next owner to cherish.Message me for any information I might have missed, but silly offers won't get a reply. I'm not in a hurry to sell.
