Here for sale is Dot, our 1964 splitscreen Sundial camper. The "Sundial" model was a US version of the common Westfalia SO23. Built with a tin top on a standard T21 panel van base, they were delivered with fitted units and fold down bed. The windows were proprietary aluminium Hehr units as fitted to contemporary Airstream trailers.oShe was imported from Utah in 2009 and had a full nut and bolt bare metal restoration over the next three years. The work completed was comprehensive and a summary follows below:ExteriorThe body had any corroded body parts cut out and replaced, all the running gear was restored to original specifications, the steering box reconditioned and new idler bearing fitted, all consumable parts were replaced (bearings, bushes, rubber components, knuckle joints, shock absorbers, brake shoes, cables, brake lines, tyres, etc), The body had all the windows restored with new seals and the Hehr wind out safari windows on the double side doors and pop outs on the opposite side were restored to full working order. It was then finished in the original Pearl White over Turkish Blue 2K paint.EngineThe original 1500cc engine was fully rebuilt by Jay Parker in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and had a 1740cc conversion with new barrels, pistons, rods, complete heads (with unleaded valve seats), Empi carb, clutch and larger capacity deep finned sump to give better cooling. The gearbox was reconditioned and had new bearings and a third gear. The engine compartment also contains a Fireblitz automatic extinguisher and a butane gas bottle for cooking and the fuel tank that has been steam cleaned and sealed.Interior When the van arrived the original interior was unfortunately missing however this gave us the opportunity to build something special. Consequently the interior had a hand built bespoke refit with lightweight units veneered in American cherry wood protected with 2k lacquer. It comprises four large cupboards and a wardrobe, shelves and cubby holes, 2-way fridge and combination two burner, grill and sink unit with electric tap and fresh and waste water bottles. It includes dedicated table storage containing a bespoke folding table with hand painted chess and backgammon boards.  A rock and roll ¾ bed trimmed in ‘dotty' fabric over a dual density foam base to give a really comfortable night's sleep also has storage beneath for bedding. The van has full curtains for all windows in colour matched lined stripey fabric. Front seats are upholstered in colour matched vinyl with contrast piping with three fitted seatbelts. The new spare wheel is stored behind the front seats in a purpose made colour matched vinyl bag that also holds the jack and wheelbrace. Flooring is pretty chequerboard vinyl in the rear and carpet in the front cab. The front cab also holds a 2kg carbon dioxide fire extinguisher behind the driver's seat for extra safety.Electrics are taken care of with several 240v sockets and 12v light switches finished in pristine chrome all supplied from a modern mcb unit and caravan split charging/distribution panel feeding a new leisure battery. Music is provided by a new Phillips DAB head unit fitted into a bespoke colour matched panel in the cab with four speaker system (the original radio is still fitted into a perfect uncut dashboard). The new panel also contains an oil temperature gauge, clock and 12v socket. A minor problem is that the fuel gauge has stopped working. There is a new sender so I'm guessing it's the gauge. I will try to get this sorted before a sale. ExtrasDot will come with the custom made table described above, a set of matching place mats, gas bottle, charging lead, water and waste bottles, carbon monoxide detector, tailored outdoor cover and a selection of service manuals and camper books. I will include some spare parts left over from the restoration that may be useful in future.Dot drives really well but she is a 60 year old vehicle! It's an involving drive, changing gears is always a lottery and braking and steering are not like a modern vehicle. If you want a modern van feel you'll be disappointed but if you want something that is involving and puts a smile on your face (and gets people waving to you!) then this is the van for you. Dot is a truly unique camper restored and built to a very high specification and will be an appreciating classic. She is all ready to throw some food and clothes into and head for the great outdoors!Payment of £500 to be made by PayPal after the auction ends with the balance either cash or bank transfer (preferred) on collection.
