Finished in the classic Mercedes colour of Brilliant Silver with contrasting Blue Leather interior, this one family owned 1991 260E presents in outstanding condition throughout; having recently benefitted from a thorough mid-life refresh. Having covered a mere 90, 400 miles and in rust free condition, I bought this car from the grandson of the original owner last year with the intention of reviving to as near perfect condition as reasonably practical. The 260E has been garaged for the most part of its life and clearly not exposed to salted roads, which is my main criteria when buying these cars. The car has benefitted from an overhaul of the ignition system, including the replacement of the spark plugs, HT leads, distributor cap and rotor arm, a replacement OVP relay, as well as fresh oil and filter, transmission fluid and filter, a new thermostat and replacement duo valve, fresh coolant and a new wiper blade. In addition, both front ball joints have been replaced, along with front suspension top mounts, the wheels have been refurbished and powder-coated and shod with fresh Continental rubber and the rest of the car checked over, as it has not been used in anger for a few years due to the owner's ill health. Cosmetically, in addition to the fresh wheels, the whole car including the lower Sacco panels and bumpers has been repainted to a very high standard. There was a chip here and a door ding there, and when embarking on the repainting of individual panels and blending across shut lines, you will never achieve a perfect finish; especially with silver! As such, I took the costly decision to do the lot, and do the lot right. The result is that the bodywork is flawless, something which is not usually the case for a 30-year-old vehicle. As stated above, this car has been owned by grandfather and grandson from new, having originally been a demonstration vehicle for the lucky customers of Greenoaks Mercedes-Benz, Maidenhead (whose number plates it still wears) for the first 6 months of its life. It then moved to Wiltshire, where it remained for all of its life and was serviced by Mercedes-Benz main agents in Bournemouth until 56, 000 miles in 2004. Subsequent maintenance has been carried out by independent garages until it's major recommissioning outlined above, this year. The car is equipped with quite a rare full blue leather interior, which remains in excellent condition, with perfect Walnut wood trim and no peeling to the metal inlays in the door kick plates as is common on these cars. It also retains its original Blaupunkt radio, with 4 factory fitted speakers and power antenna, electric windows and electric slide tilt sunroof. On the road, the 260E performs as you would expect, delightfully. Quiet and smooth, with a ride comfort that a modern E Class could only dream of. The automatic transmission shifts through the ratios without fuss and good progress can be made thanks to the stoic 2. 6 litre M103 engine. I am confident that this car stands up to any trial or inspection and that it will provide many years of happy motoring to its next owner. Rust-free, well sorted W124s like this are becoming harder and harder to find and I would assure readers of this advert that with £5k in recent expenditure, this car is not in the same league as most tired, 30-year-old ‘driver standard' cars. It is one for the owner's club shows rather than one for the supermarket car park; that is for sure. Please feel free to contact me should you require more information or to arrange viewing.
