1989 Mercedes-Benz 420 sl

One of the last to run off the production line in September 1989, and one of only 2,148 of this variant sold worldwide (est. 600 remaining in the UK). This is the rarest of the R 107 s. This variant is highly sought after and, being built post-1986, has all the additional refinements and driver comforts the wizards at MB gave to these later models. It's a fast appreciating classic, and an absolute joy to drive. It puts a smile on people's face everywhere you go.

The car has a 4,196 cc V 8 petrol engine, automatic transmission, with sport and economy modes. ABS, electric windows and electric passenger mirror. Factory fitted extras include heated front seats, adjustable lumbar support and rear child seats.

Lots of history and receipts, and a full-service history. This car has been well looked after, including mostly recently by the SL Shop of Stratford-upon-Avon.

The colour combination is stunning. Midnight blue coachwork, parchment (cream) leather interior. The door panels are fitted in Connolly leather, instead of the usual factory fitted plastic trim (fitted by Silver Arrows Automobiles as part of a major restoration in 2001 costing £5,897.50).

The soft top was replaced by the previous owner circa 2015, and they also had the hardtop resprayed at a similar time. Both are in great condition. The previous owner also had new heater matrix and air ducts fitted in 2010 (at a cost of £1,810), and the alloys refurbished in 2014.

The car is fitted with an aftermarket Sony stereo system with a USB port, and modern speakers. The original Blaupunkt stereo is included in the sale (replacements go for £600 these days!).

Under my stewardship the car has been stored in a garage and driven nearly exclusively in dry weather. For the last 18 months the car has been looked after and serviced by the SL Shop.

The car's mileage is 137 k, however the car has recently undergone a £10 k+ top-end rebuild following a head gasket failure in 2020. This involved a head reskim, acid dip, new valves/stems/guides etc. The SL Shop are famous for their “factory-standard” work. This engine is running beautifully, and in a condition now to be enjoyed for many more miles. You see many of these cars still going at 250 k. All the receipts for recent work are included. For the last few years under my ownership this car has been cared for with no expense spared.
