For sale here is a wonderful very-early Mk1 Triumph Stag – built in May 1970, the 78th ever built (Chassis number LD/78-BW).  This car was much cherished by my late father and is now ready for the next stage in its 52 year life.

XUT861J is fitted with the fabulous 'burbling' Triumph V8 engine with a throaty head-turning roar when the accelerator is depressed. It has the desirable manual gearbox with overdrive in 3rd and 4thThe engine was stripped, re-bored and rebuilt in October 2017 by A.M Restorations of Plymouth (at a cost of £9,581) and has probably only covered 1000 miles or so since.  The engine had new Weber carbs fitted in November 2020 and of course has had all of the cooling enhancements required by the Stag including an uprated MK1 radiator, additional header tank system and an electric fan which can be independently switched on .

The car was subject to a bare-metal restoration in 2013 by Devon Classic Cars (at a cost of £27,154).  The restoration included a new hood, carpets and a complete re-upholstery of the vinyl seats.  The Hard-top was resprayed along with the rest of the car.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate that comes within the extensive history file shows that XUT was built for the British market and was finished in New White with a black interior and black hood.  The file includes every bill since January 2013 - totalling over £50,000!

Little is known about XUT's early history – it appears to have spent time in the Wymondham/Swaffham area of Norfolk.  By early 1990s it was clear from the photographic records that XUT required some attention and was then subject to a bare-metal restoration taking until 1997.  It was during this restoration that it was again painted its correct white (having spent some time painted red).

XUT left the factory as a Triumph V8 engined automatic.  In 2010 a MK2 V8 was fitted with the much more desirable manual gearbox with overdrive on 3rd and 4thgears.

Bodywork

As mentioned above, XUT has been subject to two bare-metal rebuilds and is in lovely condition although there are two very small patches of rust on the two front wings at the bottom of the mudguards.

Interior

The interior overall is in excellent condition and is the correct smooth grain style.  All electrics and instrumentation are working as they should.

The car will come with 12 months MOT (MOT booked for 13th July 2021).  The mileage shows as 50,719 having covered about 20,000 miles since 2013.
