The 308 GTB was launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1975 and was
built alongside the 308 GT 4. designed as a replacement for the 246
Dino. Designed by Leonardo Fiorvanti. the man who styled some of
the most iconic Ferrari's including the Daytona. the new 308 was a
rakish and attractive body which fused classic elements of Ferrari
styling with a thoroughly modern design. For the first two years of
production the body of the 308 was produced in fibreglass. after
which steel was used.
The 308 shared a similar tube frame
chassis as the original Dino and 308 GT 4 with four wheel double
wishbone independent suspension. The engine was a V 8 unit which was
positioned behind the driver and was transversely mounted with
double overhead camshafts and four 40 DCNF Weber carburettors. br/>latterly replaced with Bosch K Jetronic mechanical fuel injection.
The gearbox was a five speed manual unit with all synchromesh. In
1982 the Quattrovalvole (QV) engine was introduced which featured
four valves per cylinder and saw power increase to 245 bhp at
7000 rpm from 214 bhp of the earlier 308 GTBi engine.
Performance was impressive with 0-60 mph attained in 6. 7 seconds. br/>0-100 mph in 14. 30 seconds and on to a top speed of
156 mph.
This Ferrari 308 GTS was supplied new by Maranello Sales Ltd. br/>Egham in March 1985 to a property developer based in London.
At the end of the 1980's he decided that he would like it with a
little more power so he approached Nigel Mansell's Ferrari
Dealership. Emblem Sports Cars in Dorset and asked them to fit the
fuel injected four litre V 12 400 series engine. taking the top
speed of this car to over 200 mph. Ferrari don't usually release
their engines for use in other projects but it is believed that
Mansell was able to acquire the £75. 00 unit because he was a big
hero of the Maranello marque after two brave years as F 1 team
driver in 1989/90. This Ferrari 308 GTS known as 'Nigel's Flyer' had
three more owners since the early 1990's the third owner took it
to Italy around 2000 to an Ferrari enthusiasts rally. but the car
has been laid up since 2004/5. Re-commissioned this year. this
308 GTS V 12. finished in blue with light tan interior. is supplied
with a V 5 registration document. an Mo T test certificate which
expires in August 2014. a handbook. service books and a file
containing invoices and old Mo T certificates. This is an
