VW Golf Mk1 GTI Convertible (Cabriolet)Sportline.I know that I will regret selling this car but needs must as it is not getting used enough so it's time for it to go to leave me time for other projects.I have owned this car for 5 years now and after a long period kept in a heated garage/ man cave I have slowly re commissioned it and brought it back to the condition you see it in now. It was looked after but not really driven for 8 years before I bought it, except for the occasional service or mot which kept the mileage very low but in that time although it looked fantastic, it did develop a few problems which I have gradually sorted till it is spot on now, starting and driving perfectly.            If you know your Sportline history you will know this is a very rare car. One of only 499 original Sportline's which were only made in red or black. The red version is much more easy to find because loads more red cars were produced, it was a very popular colour in the late 80's but for me the black was always the car to have, with the black BBS alloy wheels looking perfect with the black bodywork. Records are very hazy on the subject of numbers, with one website claiming only 25 Black Sportline cars were produced !! I'm not sure of the total number of black cars but it's generally thought to be about 100 ish with about 400 red ones.       This car obviously has the original BBS alloys, with new tyres, the original body kit and the original Recaro sport cloth interior, which looks like it has never been sat in and is totally mint. From the beginning of lockdown to the present time the car has had a great deal of work done to it, starting with a trip to a local VW specialist to sort electrical gremlins. Brand new battery, heater switch, indicator stalk, and fuse box, and a few earthing problems sorted everything out.          Next was the fuel system. Back to a specialist in Golfs to fit a new lift pump in the fuel tank, clean out muck from the tank and sort fuel lines. The dreaded Golf fuel filler neck rust problem was checked and actually found Not to be a problem ( was the only part of the fuel system hat wasn't ) Then a brand new fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator was fitted and new fuel filter. Sorted !!           Body work of the car was always very good but I decided to re spray the front of the car because of stone chips which really let the car down and the bonnet was also painted as it was badly faded. The drivers door had a scratch which annoyed the hell out of me, so that was painted as well. My paintwork guy is a professional that I have used for years and, on his advice, I have tried to paint as little as I could. This car is a true survivor and I wanted to keep it as original as possible and not just over restore everything. Everything that wasn't painted has been machine buffed by the valeter who specialises in paint detailing. As the old saying goes, “ cars are only original once !!”           Then it was the mechanics, new brakes, new battery and new engine mounts and a complete service including cam belt, for piece of mind.           The last job was the roof. It's fully electric and works faultlessly, but was looking tired with the odd split so on went a brand new (old stock) roof and new actuating cables as the old ones tend to stretch and it's silly not to replace them with a new hood. It has the original glass heated rear screen and the upholstery guy kept the original garage delivery window sticker ( sad I know !!)            All the parts used, throughout, if they were available, have been genuine VW, bought from Heritage.            You are welcome to come and view the car in Welwyn Garden City or ring me on 07899925404. If you are a genuine buyer, the kettle is always on. I really can't stress enough how nice this car is, it puts a huge grin on your face every time you drive it although you are always late for everything because everyone wants to chat to you at the shops or petrol station !!              I doubt there is a nicer, original, black Sportline anywhere in the world at the moment so if you don't buy my car then good luck finding another one as good. Come and look at the car, you will not be disappointed.               Cheers, John.
