This truck was restored and set up as a service vehicle in 1997 for my business repairing pre- ‘60s vehicles and equipment. The work involved going to the customer's home or site to revive everything from Model T Fords to ancient D-8 Caterpillars. The restoration did not include blasting and painting the frame, but the replacement cab, fenders, service body, and hood were sand blasted to bare metal and coated with premium paint and hardener. The paint job has held up very well for 24 years, but a few bubbles have appeared in 4 places as the photos will show.
Upgrades included: BD 264 cu in engine with 2-barrel carburetor (154 HP @ 3800 RPM, 248 FT/LB @ 2400 RPM) replaced SD 220 ci in engine. 5 speed New Process transmission replaced 3 speed. One-ton springs and new shocks. Dana 70 rear axle 3.54 ratio (Refer to 1966 Dodge D 300 for brake parts) replaced the 4:10 IHC axle. 8R 19.5 wheels and tires. This combination results in approximately 2600 RPM at 70 MPH. L160 heavy duty radiator. Harbor service body. Split exhaust manifold with stainless steel stacks. 35 gallon commercial truck fuel tank replaced stock 15 gallon unit. Commercial truck seats replaced the stock bench. The brakes were overhauled with all new lines and cylinders and filled with DOT 5 silicone based fluid which does not attract water and lead to internal rusting. New fuel lines were installed tank to carburetor.
The engine and transmission were overhauled and have approximately 20,000 miles on them. The engine wicks out a little oil here and there. The rear axle had a 3.54 ring and pinion installed and the bearings were good to reinstall. There is a brake pressure regulator in the rear axle line because the brakes are much larger than the originals. There are two trailer pigtail sockets in the rear along with a couple adapters in the glove box, an electric brake controller and a smaller ball in the spare parts. The tires were manufactured in 1988, so they are 33 years old and show vary minor age cracking. They were originally purchased for a different project and languished in the shop until a couple years ago when they went on this truck. They were never driven or exposed to outside conditions and seem very sound. However some might want to replace them due to age.
NOTE: An 8 foot standard pickup bed is available, which came off the same truck the replacement cab came from. The left fender is dinged-up. It belongs to a friend and he will happily load it on something for you, on site by appointment for $250.
The truck was just fully serviced: lube, oil, filters and front wheel bearings re-packed. Original parts book and owners manual included. SOLD AS-IS WITH NO WARRANTEE EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED.
