Here we have my Hot Rod / Lakester for sale. Purchased in September 2010 from the builder, Stuart Withers from Widdicombe in Devon. Vehicle is registered as a Singer with a registration date of 1948. As such it is Tax and MOT exempt. It has a custom Z'd chassis, a glass Ford 27 T body, a Dodge 318 (5.2 l) V 8 and a 727 3 speed automatic gearbox with gated shifter. The running gear is a mixture of British classic components and the rear axle is Volvo. Tyres are Avon's on the front and Vintage Hi-Milers on the rear. The speedo is not connected (never was) and is for show only. There is a combined water and oil temp gauge that functions correctly.

I have had a fair amount of work done on the car during my ownership Replaced tired Plymouth 273 LA engine with a Dodge 318 which was refreshed with new gaskets.

New Holley Carb

New Edelbrock Manifold

New Distributor and leads

New Thermostat

New Coil

Gearbox rebuilt by Alders, service of small trans cooler.

Rear axle and half shafts serviced and fresh oil

New brake shoes all round

In the past few months the car has had a

New Battery

New Starter Motor

New K&N Air Filter which has just been cleaned

The car has just been serviced in the last two weeks with fresh oil, new oil filter and spark plugs cleaned and gapped. The car has also had a full once over to ensure everything is tight and greased.

The car needs nothing except a new petrol cap, a temporary taped down replacement is currently in situ…

As you can imagine the performance is more than enough, limited only by the cross-ply tyres and the drum brakes. She is very low with quite a wide front end so handles well, again within the constraints of the technology at hand. The series 1 Landy steering wheel is quite large, which means that if you are 6 foot or over, you will probably have to think about a replacement with a smaller diameter. The tractor seats are fixed and provide no adjustment, but are surprisingly comfortable with their ergonomic shape. You sit low in the tub, and the aluminium lining provides a comfortable support for your back. Suspension travel is very limited, but in keeping with the style of the car. Potholes should be avoided wherever possible. You will have trouble removing the stupid grin from your face after a drive though. The car sounds great through the old school torque tube pipes. Whilst baffled, I'm pleased to confirm that the noise from them is more than loud enough. She comes with a spare front wheel and tyre, and also a custom built rear luggage rack which bolts on to the back of the chassis.

This car is built well and looks right. A testament to Stuart Withers' skills and creativity, and fairly well known with frequent appearances at the Hayride and other events. It is obviously not real Henry Steel or period correct but then you aren't going to need a second mortgage to own her. I'm not getting much use out of her as I would like, I tend to ride my Harley when I do get time for a spin. I will be sad to see her go, and hope she finds another owner who will enjoy her for the next ten years as much as I did for the last ten.
