Where does one even begin to describe the Ford Escort? As British as a Cream Tea and as synonymous with the UK's motoring history as the Mini. It was a universal success story from start to finish and production figures from every generation of Escort ran into numbers that were the envy of all other motor manufacturers.
The key to Escort's success was the fact that there was a model and variation for everyone - you wanted a two, three, 4, or 5 door saloon hatch or estate? No problem. You wanted a frugal Diesel or a sporty petrol? No problem. Even if you desired wind in the hair motoring, or a little camper van - no problem, Escort had you covered. The same too goes for the commercial side of things with the Escort Van. Its no exaggeration when Ford say their commercial line is the backbone of Britain as that statement always has been perfectly true.

What Bradley James Classics are delighted to offer you here is a 1994 MK5 1.3 (Petrol) van finished in the glorious hue of Radiant Red. We are particularly excited to be able to offer you this van because its something of a rarity today and represents an extraordinary opportunity. Allow us to explain….

MK1 and MK2 Escort Vans have now entered what we term as the unobtainable to most stage in their product price cycle, any you see for sale now usually command exorbitant sums. MK3 and MK4 vans are hot on their heels pricing wise now and good ones can regularly be seen with a £10k plus asking price. This means that the MK5 and final MK6 variants are the ones that are within the ordinary persons grasp and therefore you don't have to look into the possibility of a second mortgage to own one. The MK5 is probably the rarest out of the bunch these days as in terms of production years it was actually the MK of Escort that Ford produced least of before they facelift it with the MK6. Therefore any MK5 Escort is a bit of a rarity but a van is something very special indeed because so few have actually survived.

Our van here is in remarkably good condition for its years and miles. One always has to set their expectations accordingly when looking at a car or van that is now over a quarter of a century old and of course you naturally will find scratches here and there, the odd little dent and some stone chips - all of these things that can happen within the first year never mind over the course of 26 years. However looking at a van is totally different to looking at a car. A car has always been a luxury item: a considered purchase. Its always been the car that has been loved and cherished by its owners and washed and waxed of a Sunday. However, vans were never usually in 9 cases out of 10 lucky enough to enjoy the same fate - they were not a considered purchase, not pampered or waxed at weekends but rather they were a necessity for businesses always having to work hard for a living and earn their keep. Hence why so few have survived. These were literally everywhere, favoured especially by Her Majesty's Royal Mail, British Telecom and the Gas Board to name but a few, however you need to ask yourself when was the last time you actually saw one out on the road? We cant recall either.

Our example here has covered a genuine 97,000 miles from new (how many times have we seen examples of vans with 2 or even 3 times as many miles with most of them covering a years worth of driving for the normal motorist in just a few months). It has evidently been looked after and well kept having had just three owners from new - one of which kept the van for 20 out of its 26 years: nobody keeps a vehicle that long and doesn't look after it. Yes you will find signs of use with a few little dings scratches and imperfections but we have to remind ourselves of the purpose of which a van was always for - its only been in recent years that they have become coveted prized items. It has been ply lined from new because the side panels are beautifully straight and don't have the trademark push out dents from the inside out where boxes and objects have came in contact with the sides, so its clearly been looked after. Underneath, and the van bed, are in fine fettle as are the mechanical components having had a recent exhaust backbox, tyres and the steel wheels refurbished. You will find the undercarriage has been wax oiled too. The little 1.3 petrol was always a faithful reliable unit and one can easily enjoy the benefits of simple home mechanics at the weekend with this one - you wont find an ECU or electronic sensor in sight.

Inside the cab is in beautiful order as well with the rubber flooring being in lovely unworn condition, having had mats down from new. The seats are still wonderfully supple and supportive, the dash plastics are nice and bright and not scratched to pieces as they usually were, and it even still retains the original Ford Radio Cassette: again showing the care that has been bestowed upon her - what more could one want.
