EXTERIOR

This Type 2 Westfalia Campmobile is finished in Chiantirot (code L31H) and incredibly still showcases its original paint.   To find an unrestored original camper that is structurally perfect. never welded and with absolutely no rust is truly a rare and special moment indeed.   The paintwork boasts a deep rich shine with only tiny micro-blemishes preventing the description of flawless being justified. these being namely a small section of paint imperfection on the front grill and two miniscule touched in stone chips on each rear arch.   All panels are in perfect order with even gaps and the correct linear faint ripples down each side in line with the original factory welds. leaving in no doubt the claim that this vehicle is unrestored. All doors shut perfectly against the rubbers that are original and have never been removed. and all handles and locks feel tight and brand new.   Beautifully preserved. a true one off.

INTERIOR

One for the collector. this full Westfalia factory conversion has remained completely unaltered and unrestored from new.   The condition of this original example befits the remarkable low mileage. and provides the new owner with the ultimate showpiece amongst Volkswagen aficionados and likeminded classic vehicle enthusiasts.   The amazing originality of this vehicle even extends to the unwashed from new curtains and mosquito net still retaining the factory paper part number tags. long gone after the first wash in other examples.   The original sawdust from the interior fitting at manufacturer can even be seen in the bottom of some cabinets!  All the fragile catches and rubber door stays have remained perfectly intact. as have all curtain hooks and rings. something almost unheard of in todays market.   The Birch plywood wall and ceiling panels are flawless and exactly as Westfalia intended. as are the woodgrained and mar resistant furniture components with soft plastic beaded edges.   The table surfaces and interior trim are finished in factory fresh Oyster White and completes the hugely clever interior design of this classic Campmobile.   The leatherette trimmed front seats are pristine and are even complimented by the ultra-rare and highly sought after central ‘buddy seat' complete with seatbelt and trimmed in matching material.   All interior functions and controls operate exactly as intended. although the Electrolux fridge has been disconnected.  Time warp is a term used freely. but completely justified with this amazing vehicle.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The four cylinder flat four air cooled engine with a capacity of 1584cc produces 57 bhp at 4400 rpm and is a mechanical delight.   Supreme cleanliness from an unrestored example will gain much awe from onlookers.   Reliable usage is a given due to fastidious maintenance using correct grade oils and genuine parts.   The factory fitted type 181 Cyclone deep air filter remains as per the factory build specification.   The optional limited slip fully synchronized 4-speed gearbox is a sheer joy to operate.   Even a brand new ‘old stock' genuine exhaust system has been sourced to maintain the standard soundtrack precisely.   Nostalgically wonderful.

WHEELS. TYRES & BRAKES

Correct 5” steel rims with VW mirror finish original chrome hubcaps have never been refurbished and are immaculate.    Quality replacement thin band white wall tyres of size 195/70/R14 are fitted all-round including a matching spare and have masses of tread remaining.   A second spare wheel with an unused sand tyre from new is still housed correctly behind the rear bench.   A dual hydraulic brake system operating independently in pairs on the front and rear wheels operate exactly as Volkswagen intended.

HISTORY FILE

Almost the best part!  In 1972. an American by the name of Jacques Jouzeau moved over to France with the oil company for which he worked.   Whilst stationed there. he ordered this brand new Westfalia from Volkswagen Main Agent Ste Splendid Garage in Bordeaux.   His original intention was to complete a long term road trip to Mauritania in North-West Africa. so in order to combat the extreme climate and conditions. the vehicle was ordered with factory fitted options to include Cyclone deep air filter. heavy duty sand tyres and a tailgate Mosquito net to name just a few.   A padded dash top was also specified to meet US regulations. as the intention was always to have the car taken back there.   Sadly the planned epic trip never actually happened. and when work took Mr Jouzeau to Africa the van was dry stored in France.   Upon retirement in 2002 he realised that he was no longer fit enough to make the trip. and so the camper was put up for sale.   At this point. an incredible 10. 01 miles had been covered!

In December 2002 Mark Reynolds of Just Kampers was told about this ‘one off' and couldn't believe what he was hearing.   Knowing not to pass on such an opportunity. Mark bought the camper and in January 2003 it arrived at Just Kampers HQ in Hampshire.   The camper was promptly handed over to renowned Jack's Garage in West London to have a documented major service and meticulous checkover. with many consumables replaced purely as a precation rather than a necessity.   The next port of call was FH Ellis Coachworks to have four new tyres and a highly sympathetic professional polish to the original paintwork.

A Mr W B Earl acquired the vehicle in July 2003 for personal use. however in 2006 he took the vehicle to renowned Volkswagen collector Keith Bingham asking him to lower the van and fit a new interior.   Mr Bingham point blank refused to commit such an automotive atrocity and even went as far as refusing to hand back the vehicle!  Instead. he offered to complete the conversion for Mr Earl on another vehicle and purchased this himself.   Part of his collection until February 2012 when his good friend. Mr Ronald Brown. managed to convince Mr Bingham to sell the camper to him.   Mr Brown. another diehard fan and collector of Volkswagens. having had many classic vehicles of his magazine and club book featured has decided to pass this truly exceptional vehicle on in order to make way for other ‘must have' purchase!

The comprehensive history file accompanying the vehicle fully validates the mileage of 12. 69 and further cements the true originalty.  All handbooks. Westfalia guide. fully stamped service book and even the very early VW diagnostic cards are present. along with full invoice documentation and club magazine feature.   Undoubtedly the flagship piece to any classic car collection.
