This FJ-40 was my son's college commute car in the early 90's.   After college (in the late 90's) we decided on a frame off rebuild to make it into a rock crawler.   It was stripped down to the frame and the body (tub) was rebuilt (new sheetmetal) to remove all traces of rust.   The tub was coated inside and out with Rhino Lining and it was painted Dune Beige as was the whole rest of the car including the hard top.   Basically every part. piece. nut and bolt was removed and refurbished.   Major mechanical modifications were made to make it the perfect off road rock crawler.   The wheel base was lengthened (by reversing the rear springs and putting a reverse shackle kit on the front). 4. 88 gears were put front and rear and ARB pneumatic lockers were installed front and rear.   The transfer case was modified by Marlin Crawlers to give it even lower gearing in low range.   For safety we added a full roll cage. 4 wheel disc brakes and 5 point harnesses.

After the complete frame off rebuild we enjoyed it for many years of back country off-roading.   Every trail at the Great Smokey Mountains Trail Ride (Tellico Plains) was conquered for many years in a row (early 2000's).   The beautiful paint and body work had the expected encounters with trail-side ruts. roots. boulders and rocks…… but that's what we built it for!

It was great fun. but soon the FJ found itself parked in the garage at the expense of other car projects.   It has basically sat garaged for the past 13 years. being driven every year a few miles to keep everything fresh and to get the mandatory inspection.   It's now time for someone else to have some fun with it.

Items that need pointing out:

1) the front axle seals weep a little. I would replace them.

2) the engine is strong. but after 10 years of sitting in my garage I would rebuild the carburetor. it is a little sluggish.

3) remember this is a rockcrawler that has conquered difficult trails. it has scrapes and dents that occurred after the rebuild.   The body and paint aren't perfect.   The only body rust is a few spots on the front fenders.   The tub is rebuilt. rust free and coated with Rhino Lining.
