My parents bought a small town Chrysler Plymouth Dodge dealership in 1966. I grew up in the muscle car era. I drove some pretty cool trade-ins and auction cars during my high school years. but after graduation I wanted to drive my "own" car to college. Even though I probably could have chosen one of the newer body style Mopars. I was in love with the fastback '66 Charger! I had never even seen one before I laid my eyes on this beauty in the high school parking lot. I fell in love with the looks. the 383 four barrel engine. the four bucket seats with lay-down rear seats and trunk panel. When I saw the "electroluminescent" gauges light up at night - I was hooked for life!
The car was rust-free. straight. complete and unaltered - which was already rare in 1976 for a 10 year old car. The original "Citron Gold" paint was still in good shape and the interior was black (not green or brown) so I could easily paint the exterior in a color I wanted. This was MY car!!
We pulled and overhauled the original engine and rolled the body into our little body shop that we used to "prep" used cars for the lot. My buddies and I helped sand the car down. We didn't see a trace of rust or "bondo" (which was very rare for a 10 year old car). The only spot we had to deal with was the hole in the passenger side quarter panel that was there after we removed the aftermarket rear-mounted antenna (weird). I chose the color and the car has carried the same bright blue paint around ever since!
I have several of the original "repair orders" showing what work was performed beginning in 1976.
The old carpet was pulled out and replaced with my own choice of "cool" shag blue carpet I found at the local furniture store. I replace the original wheels and covers with the same "Keystone Klassics" that are still on the car today! When the car was ready to hit the road. it was the coolest. most unique muscle car in town!! I drove it to college 3 hours away back and forth many times - and had a blast in this car!!!
The car went into storage in '79 until my son started driving it in '97. We replaced the shag carpet with reproduction carpet at that time. He had a good time in the car too - until someone backed into it and crushed the driver's door. That incident put the car back into storage - and it's been there ever since.
I recently sold the dealership and lost my storage - so reluctantly am choosing to sell the car so someone else can enjoy it. I found an NOS left front door shell. We put in a new battery. fuel pump and tuned the engine (plugs. wires. cap and rotor). The car starts and runs great! The brakes work but might need some work (manual drums). The power steering seems to work good. The tranny shifts good. I put the car on a hoist to check out the floor pans and frame rails. I could not see any rust in the frames. floor pans or trunk floor. We added additional undercoat before I started driving it so I'm sure that helped to preserve the original body metal. The only perforation I can see is a very small area in the front corner of one of the quarters. It looks very minimal and repairable. The chrome is all there. remarkably straight and nice with very minimal pitting on a few of the pieces.
There is no true "numbers matching" engine in 1966 because the factory did not stamp the VIN number in the engine blocks back then (that started in '69) but the block stamping is date correct and I am very certain that the original engine is still with this car. When we bought the car it certainly all looked original and the same engine is still in the car because we have owned it for the last 38 years. The original "Data Plate" is attached to the inner fender and is in great shape. It shows the scheduled build date as March 30 (1966). 383 barrel engine. automatic transmission. exterior color. trim code. AM radio. etc. If you have any questions about the coding. please let me know. The owner's manual is included. I am also selling an original sales brochure for the '66 Charger (item number 201929670643).
If you have any questions. or need additional pictures please ask and I will do my best to accommodate.
I hope to see the car find a good home where it will get the attention it needs. It will show you a good time - guaranteed!!!
