1958 STUDEBAKER Transtar PICKUP TRUCK

Technically speaking. she's a Model 3E7 – 22.   The “3E” means 1958 half ton.   The “7” means it's powered by a 259 cubic inch. 156 horse power. Power Star V8 engine and the “22” means it has a 122” wheel base and an eight foot bed.   Behind the Power Star V8 is a three speed. column shift. with overdrive a very desirable feature.   The 1958 model was built from September 6. 1957 to July 24. 1958.   Only 4. 50 were built for the US market.

This truck is amazingly original and unmolested.   From the “swing away” tail lights to the optional directional signals mounted on top of the front fenders. everything is there as it was in 1958.   All five wheels are correct five lug Bud 15” X 6” with three spring hub cap clips.   Two hub caps are original and two are '59 caps.

Studebaker advertised “different by design” but the components are very standard. such as a T-90 Warner 3 speed transmission with overdrive. a Spicer rear axle with a 4. 09:1 ratio. Bendix brakes. 7:00-15 tires. etc.   Parts are readily available. many being stock items at local auto parts stores.   Specialty items are stocked by Studebaker International. Studebaker Parts On-Line. and many more.

This truck has undergone considerable but not a complete. restoration at this point in time.   The body. though paint was failing. was mostly rust and damage free.   All paint was stripped and refinished with PPG acrylic urethane. single stage to emulate the original finish as closely as possible.   Original spot welds and some minor blemishes were left alone as it was .   The body now sports the factory Two-Tone Colors. Code P-5888. Buff Gray Metallic (lower cab and grill) and Parchment White (upper cab and wheels). The cab floor and rear lower corners are virtually rust free. Door bottom patch panels were put in place.   The pickup bed has been protected by a camper shell its entire life.   The bed finish was left untouched to show it remarkable dent and rust free condition.   Seat upholstery shows wear and tear.

Mechanically. the truck is quite sound.   The engine starts quickly and runs strong.   Good compression (115 psi +/-).   Oil pressure (aftermarket gauge installed) comes right up to 50psi.   Pressure diminishes when the oil is hot as typical.   Drive train is quiet and smooth.   All brake components have been replaced with new.   Tires (7:00-15 bias ply) are new.   The speedometer works.   Gas gauge is not operating. nor is the heater (core and fan motor).   All glass is good.   All lights work.   New king-pins in front axle.   New oil pump and cam gear in engine. All new exhaust system. All work is photo documented in ‘jpg format. included.

Dealer installed accessories include a genuine Barden step bumper and an aluminum camper shell. right out of the fifties.   The camper shell is in poor but serviceable condition.   Included is a Factory Shop Manual and a Factory Parts Manual along with extensive. authoritative documentation authenticating the originality of the vehicle.   Why would anyone buy a Ford. Chevrolet. GMC. Dodge or International when they could own a Studebaker?
