1978 International scout II (Extremely Well Maintained)

1978 Rallye model (yes. they spelled it that way) is often considered the best year for a gasoline powered Scout II. as emissions stuff was added in 1979. I had to buy this scout this summer from a local Oregon acquaintance as my uncle “Rocky” had a white one when I was 11 and he let me drive it in the cow pastures in Tennessee when I would visit in the summers growing up. (my first solo driving experience 36 years ago) He would say don't hit a tree and the cows will get out of your way on their own. I am enjoying the memories and driving it this summer but I have too many cars and this great scout needs to find a new home.

The link here will take you to a video tour to see the car in greater detail.

Ownership History: Robert C Faber bought the car and then bought a warranty when the car had 12k miles on it. I believe he was the second owner.  I got this scout from the 3rd owner who has had it since the early 1990's and maintains all his vehicles to very high standard. (very meticulous owner and truck collector) Car comes with very detailed records and maintenance folder with all oil changes religiously done since he got it and all work he had done. Owner's manual. buyers guide. extended warranty card and original envelope. numerous articles. engine service manual. (see photo)

Engine & Automatic Transmission: The mechanics on this car are very well sorted. The car runs strong and smooth V-8 motor sounds exceptionally nice and delivers power whenever you want it. Automatic Chrysler Torqueflight transmission shifts smoothly. IH 345 was the IH medium school bus and truck motor. and is famously long-lived and durable. Engine weighs about 200 lbs more than GM/Ford equivalent cubic inch engines. and features timing gears (instead of a chain). sodium filled exhaust valves. chromium bores and high nickel content steel.   Again car comes with original factory service manual. (very desirable). Radiator recently replaced (sourced with high quality radiator from shop in LA). Water pump replaced at same time because it was accessible with radiator removed. Recently replaced ball joints on one side that were sometimes binding and causing some sluggish steering re-centering (other side ball joints still good). Has had upper transmission control arm seal replaced. Brakes recently serviced. Vehicle was always serviced (oil/filter changes every 2 to 3 k. with approved 30 wt. oil). All service records since early 1990's. This scout comes with a full rubber set of replacement hoses and belts as the 3rd owner acquired them to ensure he could keep the car serviced regularly without having to hunt for parts.

Upgrades and mods: New: 33 gallon fuel tank to extend distance when venturing into deep rural areas. Added Firestone air bags when the car was re-sprung/leaf springs (re-arc'ed  at Oregon spring) to ensure the rear will never sag or go down with when loaded up. warn hubs. brakes. muffler. shocks. carburetor. air conditioning compressor (system still as slow leak; otherwise fully functional). steering box. both window regulators. spark plugs and wires. radiator. front trailer receiver to place boat or trailer in position with ease rather than having to back up etc. has rear hitch and hookup as well. Upgraded heavy duty bumpers.  This scout was maintained at Bisio motors the local Oregon International scout service specialist. (records in folder accordingly)

Body: Body is straight. paint is good. There are a few areas in the door decal that is checking (not paint but decal) car comes with new decal kit. Glass is all in very good shape. Two very minor dings: one in top of fender and one on back tailgate. Some relatively minor corrosion on the bottom of door sills; does not show on exterior.

Tires: are very good. rims are holding up well but have a few oxidized spots. For the age and unrestored condition the exterior is in wonderful shape and looks very nice.

Interior: You can see from the photos that the interior is almost in like new condition. It is truly a time capsule when you sit inside. no cracks in the dash. All gages work.  You have to sit in this scout to really appreciate it. The driver seat has the small hole on the lower side that plagues all scout seats. it is the only negative condition item of the whole interior. A 1978 time capsule.

Summary:

This is a pristine example of an American Icon. It is in wonderful condition and perfect for cruising or taking on road trips. This is a great a car and a real pleasure to drive. it must be seen in person to truly appreciate it.

I have question regarding the paint color of this Scout.
Is it 409 School bus yellow?
