The Land Rover Series I. II. and III are off-road vehicles produced by the British manufacturer Station Wagons were fitted with a "Safari Roof" which consisted of a second roof skin fitted on top of the vehicle. FREE WHEELING HUBS INFORMATION

Locking hubs. also known as free wheeling hubs are fitted to some (mainly older) four-wheel drivevehicles. allowing the front wheels to rotate freely when disconnected (unlocked) from the front axle. This is done to reduce the mechanical resistance of the front-drivetrain when four-wheel drive is not in use. [1] The hub is a component where the wheel is directly mounted to. and is outside the axle. The hub. along with the wheel. is designed to engage (lock) onto the axle. to be powered by the drivetrain in four-wheel drive or the hub can disengage (unlock) from the axle when four-wheel drive is not needed. thus allowing the front wheels to rotate freely within the hub. without being powered by the axle.

Suggested benefits of unlocking hubs for normal road use include better fuel efficiency. quieter operation. less vibration. and lower wear however. there are no reliable studies to prove these claims.

INFORMATION - FAIREY OVERDRIVE

The overdrive does enable a Series Rover to hold highway speeds of 65 mph at lower engine rpm than a comparable Rover without an overdrive the reality in daily use is the Rover enthusiast simply uses the overdrive as a way to cruise at hgher highway speeds - thus negating the 16% gear advantage and the resultant improvement in miles per gallon.

The Fairey was an approved option by Land Rover. and thus supported by Land Rover dealers worldwide.

It adds another level of gear noise while underway but it's definitely less instrusive than the gear noise of a non-overdrive equipped Land Rover. Also. the use of the overdrive in certain driving situations. such as merging onto an interstate highway. is certainly advantageous. You can acceleate up to 55 mph in 3 rd with overdrive engaged. whereas without the overdrive you're lucky to get to 50 mph in 3 rd before you must shift into 4 th.
