Sports car racing in America exploded in the 1950s. spurred by the flood of European automobiles that followed in the wake of World War II. British manufacturers fed the frenzy in large part. hungry for the profits to be made selling into the North American market. Jaguar. Austin Healey. Allard. MG. AC Cars. Sunbeam and other British manufacturers offered lightweight. nimble touring machines of varying outputs. but little in the way of the red-blooded performers envisioned by most American weekend warriors. It did not take long before homebuilt specials found a niche. and marques such as Allard began the trend toward robust. purpose-built cars packed with American powerplants from Detroit's big three. Then came the Cobra. a mix of AC Ace roadster chassis and body and Ford V-8 power. Carroll Shelby had recast the die. and it was not long before the Rootes Group. producers of the Sunbeam Alpine. came calling. The Sunbeam Tiger debuted at the 1964 New York Auto Show. Named for Sunbeam's 1928 land speed record-setter. it was an instant success. offering performance that put it in direct competition with Jaguars and Corvettes at a fraction of the cost. and today examples such as this late-build 1965 Sunbeam Tiger Mark I roadster are highly collectible.
Originally purchased by a United States Navy officer for delivery to his USA address. it has been mechanically and cosmetically restored while sporting a 289 cubic inch V-8 engine mated to a Toploader 4-speed manual transmission with a new throttle linkage. fuel pump. master cylinder. brake booster and brake lines.
