AM/FM stereo cassette. electric rear defroster. cast alloy wheels. digital clock. the optional 5 speed manual transmission and this is one of the first 2. 00 cars produced which were exclusively built using a windshield-embedded antenna and it also boasts the distinctive early model hood gas flap!
The original hood of the DeLorean had grooves running down both sides. It included a gas flap to simplify fuel filling. The gas flap was built so that the trunk could be added to the total cargo area of the DeLorean. In August 1981. the hood flap was removed from the hood of the cars (although the hood creases stayed). This style was retained well into 1982.
This is therefore a very collectible and early 1981 model with all of it's original factory specifications and options intact. It has the optional Black leather interior and 5 speed manual transmission and its original radio. The car has none of the typical Delorean dents. discoloration or scratches in the brushed stainless steel. the door struts do not droop and the doors open fully. as do the hood compartment and rear engine struts. The door alignments and fit are perfect.
The car was originally sold to its original southern California owner on 9/3/1981 at 'Mac Magruder Chevrolet' of Palm Springs. CA to its original southern California owner and has been mechanically restored as required over the years by its most recent California owner using only genuine Delorean Motor Company DMC OEM parts with all of its original service records and original selling dealer purchase order and line check list. delivery sheets etc available. This thick file of service records shows that at no time was any expense spared on this particular cars preventive and required maintenance. The brakes. boosters. alternator and shocks and suspension have all been rebuilt/restored and remarkably there are no splits in the car's leather seats which remain still supple. all the gauges and switches are working and the carpeting is not worn.
The Delorean's utilize a fiberglass underbody to which the stainless steel panels are bolted and are powered by a Peugeot/Renault/Volvo cast aluminum 174c. i. V6 engine mated to either a 3 speed automatic or 5 speed manual transmission. Absolutely none of the cars were painted at the factory. The light weight structure is glass reinforced plastic with totally rust proof stainless steel skins which will last forever. During its 3 years of production 8. 83 cars were built of which 6. 39 were 1981 models with very few being the early examples like this particular car. 1. 26 were built in 1982 and 918 in 1983. the final year of production. Over the years many cars have travelled past the 200K mile smark. a testament to the cars durability. Some have been sadly left to waste away or have been abused but then there are the few. like this particulat example. that have been lovingly garaged and well maintained for future generations to collect and enjoy. This is such a car. one of the few and an early model example as well!
This is a rare opportunity to own a very rare and internationally desirable 'early model' 1981 Delorean DMC 12 still boasting most of its original specifications intact including its original matching #'s engine with a 5 speed manual transmission and Black leather interior! To buy. restore and get running such a car today would require the assistance of a very understanding banker. at best. and to find one like this particular southern California unrestored very original and stock example in such fine running and cosmetic shape is truly a remarkable find indeed!
