With the long-term popularity of GM A-bodies. it's hard to find a factory example that truly stands out. Sure. you can go the LS5 or LS6 Chevelle route. but the best of them will set you back a small house or two. Same goes for the most desirable Buicks and Pontiacs. What If we said that you could take home a reference-grade frame-off restored numbers-matching example of a limited production A-body that many GM enthusiasts aren't even aware of for under $40k? We probably have your attention now. huh? This 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Rallye 350 is one of the best examples on the market today and one of just 3. 47 ever produced. Restored with amazing attention to detail. the car features a mile-long list of original parts that range from the engine. transmission. and rear end. all the way down to the bolts that hold them in. Best of all. all these qualities exist within a balanced fun-to-drive car wrapped in a color visible from space (or at least across the parking lot).

Historically. the Rallye 350 is a pretty interesting piece. The Big Three seemed to understand that the muscle-car era was a bubble that would eventually pop thanks to rising insurance costs and government regulations. In the case of Oldsmobile. their answer to the problem was to create a fun affordable car capable of turning heads while keeping a more insurance-friendly small block under the hood. To ramp up appeal. they pulled from other trim lines and created a unique visual package that began with Code 51 Sebring Yellow. The paintwork on this Olds presents well from every angle imaginable and has a luster that few variants of yellow can claim. Underneath the top coat. the body work is straight and even with panels that fit together well and show as better-than-new.

While its fair to say the Rallye 350 was primarily an appearance package. stopping at the paint code is definitely selling it short - there are a lot of supporting details to take in here. For starters. admire the blacked-out. silver-trimmed grille usually found on the Cutlass S models. A urethane-coated front bumper fills in the space below while a scooped fiberglass W-25 hood with chrome hood pins covers the engine compartment. The sides and tops of the scoops are brought to life by a mixture of black paint and red pinstripes. Those stripes reappear on the side profile where they run from the tip of the fender to the chrome door handles. The package concludes with a single-piece back and red strip that outlines the rear window and flows down the bodyline toward the urethane-coated 442 rear bumper. Rallye 350 decals flank the quarters while a tall W35 wing. dark taillights. and N10 trumpet-style exhaust tips round out the rear view. Combined. the car offers a visual punch that ensures no one will overlook this Olds.

For customers interested in the Rallye 350. engine options were limited to the L74 350ci V8. The foundation is one of Oldsmobile's ultra-strong nickel-infused blocks which wears gold paint. a 395558 casting number. and a matching VIN derivative stamp just under the driver side head. The cast-iron cylinder heads sport the correct "6" casting as well as flashy chrome valve covers. Up top. the original single Rochester Quadrajet provides fuel for the small block. GM brass rated the package at 310hp and 390lb/ft of torque impressive for a car focused on flash and economy. The front of the engine spins all the standard hardware as well as a power steering pump while a factory style radiator and clutch fan keep the 350 cool. Gases escape through factory manifolds that connect to an absolutely pristine stainless dual exhaust system. From the "Rallye 350" decal on the radiator shroud to original pieces like the distributor. carburetor. and open-face alternator. everything is present and accounted for.

Underneath. it becomes easier to comprehend just how clean this car is. The spotless original floorpans wear a coat of satin black which allows all that fresh hardware to take center stage. From fresh lines to the correct paper tags to the new fuel tank and sending unit. it's difficult to stress how nicely finished the undercarriage really is. In the center. the original TH350 automatic transmission handles shifting duties. Power flows down the correctly-marked driveshaft to the original "SF" 12-bolt rear which features Posi-traction and 3. 42 gears. Around the remarkably original drivetrain. the FE2 "Rallye Sport Suspension" package puts the car's power to good use with factory upgraded springs as well as front rear sway bars. Naturally. the suspension has been fully rebuilt with new ball joints. springs. shocks. sway bar links and tie rod ends. The suspension is aided by factory power steering as well as power brakes which clamp down on drums at all four corners. The wheel wells are filled with the original color-keyed 14-inch Rally II wheels wrapped in 225/70R14 Radial T/A tires.

For what was meant be a somewhat stripped-down variant of the Cutlass. the interior offers plenty of visual cues that give it a much more upscale feel. Open the doors to find rich black door panels accented with bright stainless and rich wood grain. Step past the Fisher Body door sill covers and clean black carpet. protected by rubber floor mats. covers the solid original panels below. Nicely finished bucket seats with headrests feature a stylish pattern while offering plenty of support. Between the seats. the factory center console starts with an elevated armrest/storage area that flows into the lower panel where the gear selector lives among plenty more wood grain. From the driver seat. factory instrumentation keeps an eye on fuel. temperature. oil pressure. speed. revs. and time across three gauges. Controls for the lights and heater/defroster remain within easy reach while the AM radio takes the center spot. In front of the passenger. an F85 badge remind visitors they're in a true sports coupe. The trunk is equally well finished thanks to a correct decals. a factory trunk mat. and a color-keyed spare tire in case of emergency.

The sale of this Rallye 350 includes some great vintage pieces from Olds. including marketing materials and an original owner's manual. There is also a binder with pictures of nearly all the important part numbers as well as notes from the previous owner that highlight the original pieces.
