Volvo 1800E Coupe

After three happy and enjoyable years. it is with much regret and sadness that I have no choice but to let my stunning Volvo 1800E go to a fortunate new owner

The Volvo is being sold with a realistic. low reserve as she MUST be sold due to an imminent move and the subsequent reduction of garaging for my car collection

-

An extremely rare opportunity to acquire one of only 88 right hand drive Volvo 1800E's left in the UK of which only 53 are road worthy and 35 are on a SORN!

These achingly pretty Volvo 1800E Coupes have become highly sought after with serious collectors and accordingly values are now soaring as there are so few examples left. with classic car experts predicting a massive increase in their value.

Many notable collectors and celebrities have recently added Volvo 1800's to their personal collections. including Jay Leno and Mike Brewer of 'Wheeler Dealer' fame. who restored an example on their TV show. as has Fuzz Townsend quite recently. on his popular 'Car SOS' TV show. further fuelling awareness. desirability and prices.   .

The Volvo's rarity is not only due to their low production numbers. but also due to the models propensity for serious rust. and the enormous cost of restoration. and therefore many having being scrapped in the past.

Some background on the Volvo P1800 Coupe

The P1800 Coupe project was originally started in 1957 because Volvo wanted a sports car to compete in the US & European markets.  The man behind the project was an engineering consultant to Volvo. Helmer Petterson. who in the 1940s was responsible for the Volvo PV444. The design work was done by Helmer's son Pelle Petterson. who worked at the world renown Italian Carrozzeria 'Pietro Frua' at that time.  The first models were powered by a four cylinder 1. 8 litre petrol engine that was a direct development of their robust V8 truck engine. producing a bullet proof car engine. that was paired to a four speed gearbox.

Launched in January 1960 at the Brussels Motor Show as the P1800. the stunningly beautiful two door coupe received much acclaim from both the public and motoring press alike.  Due to a lack of production capacity in Sweden. initial production was carried out in the UK by Jensen Motors in West Bromwich. alas. the quality of the 'Jensen' assembled cars did not impress Volvo. and in 1963. Volvo brought production in-house and revised the model. renaming it the 1800S.  Ov er the next few years the car was improved with an increase in engine power and the fitment of an overdrive gearbox.

In 1970 the coupe received a major update. to what was by now. an ageing design.  The most notable update being to the engine. that was now increased to 2 litres and fitted with new Bosch electronic fuel injection.  The interior was also given a mild make over to bring it up to date. including more modern instruments. The steel wheels were also replaced by new. distinctive. wider rim alloy/steel wheels with wider tyres to improve grip and handling.  The model was now renamed 1800E.

The Volvo's place in automotive history was secured forever. when the producers of a new TV series "The Saint". chose the Volvo 1800S as the star's car. the Saint was of course played by the debonair Roger Moore. who was influential in the choice of Volvo 1800 for 'Simon Templar'. he actually liked the car so much. he purchased one for himself!

Full details of the Volvo being Auctioned

A gorgeous Volvo 1800E having only had four previous owner from new. and has been cherished.  This beautiful example is completely RUST FREE having been professionally restored by the previous owner several years ago.  The car is finished in its original. and best colour combination. of Pearl White with a Black interior. and benefits from still having its original factory fitted wheels.

Bodily. the Volvo is in exceptional. totally rust free condition. having been regularly driven to local classic car shows and enjoyed. and benefits from good quality matching paint with a good shine. There are a very few minor blemishes and chips. all of which can be simply attended to should you wish to make her show perfect.  During the original restoration a new fuel filler was fitted to the rear wing. and incorrectly secured. causing six small attachment 'pimples' on the paint. please see the photo. they are not rust spots - purely cosmetic. and can be rectified by any body shop.

The wheels would benefit from a refurbishment as they are not as good as the rest of car. I hadn't bothered as I was going to be fitting a set of period 'Minilite' wheels as they make the 1800E look really amazing!

The interior is in good original. usable condition with the front seats having been upgraded with new black leather covers.  The rear bench is original. and in excellent condition with no tears or rips.  The headlining. door and side trim panels are all in good original condition. although the drivers door armrest shows signs of having been repaired at some point. but replacements are available should you decide. The dash. in common with the majority of Volvo 1800's. has a split. but having spoken with a trim repair specialist. it can be invisibly repaired at low cost.  The black carpets are fine with no wear. but the interior would benefit from their replacement.  All the instruments work correctly. The column overdrive switch was physically broken when I purchased the car. but I have purchased a brand new. expensive. correct Volvo column switch that comes with the car and simply needs fitting.

The chrome and bright work are in reasonable condition - BUT. the Volvo comes complete with OVER £2. 00 worth of BRAND NEW bumpers. body side trim strips. wing trim. scuttle vent. wiper arms and blades. windscreen brightwork trim. gutter chrome trims. front nose grill surround (re-chromed). door threshold trim channels. head and side light chrome trims. nose badge. interior rear view mirror. wheel nuts. chrome engine rocker cover. and a boot trim kit.   Due to all my time being spent restoring my E-type I never had time to fit all this expensive trim to the Volvo. but when fitted. the car will look truly stunning!

Mechanically. the engine is strong and pulls well with no untoward noises or smoke. and starts instantly - it's a Volvo!  The previous owner had the troublesome Bosch injection system replaced several years ago with the alternative. more reliable and economical. factory twin carburettor set-up. The original fuel injection manifold. injector rail with injectors. and air cleaner assembly are all included in the sale should the new owner wish to reinstall the original system.

The only mechanical gremlin is with the gearbox.  I purchased the Volvo with an issue in that it jumps out of top gear from time to time.  I have not bothered to get it sorted during my three year ownership as I simply drive around the problem.  I have spoken with a gearbox company who advised me it is most likely a worn selector rod or a weak indent spring/ball bearing. allowing the gear to jump out when decelerating.

The Volvo is MOT'd. it passed its last test just 166 miles ago. and passed with NO ADVISORIES. and is due its next test at the end of the month.

The car is completely drivable. with excellent brakes and clutch. and therefore can be driven away by the purchaser. having proved to be totally reliable during my three years of ownership - no trailer needed here!

I repeat - The Volvo is being sold with a sensible low reserve and MUST be sold due to an imminent move and subsequent loss of sufficient garaging for my car collection

This is a great opportunity to acquire an above average highly desirable. and valuable Volvo 1800E at sensible money before prices go beyond the means of enthusiast's and genuine collector's!  The classic car market is booming as wealthy collectors and pension lump-sums are being invested into classic cars as their value growth is out performing traditional investments. and give such pleasure whilst your money grows!  Just look at how Jaguar      E-type values have soared over the past few years and now command £75. 00 for a poor example and £200. 00+ for restored examples - I bought one when I purchased the Volvo. as I identified both the E-type and the Volvo 1800E as two high growth investment classics. the Volvo is just about to take off!  I am saddened and disappointed that I am having to let my beloved Volvo go. but have no alternative.  The next owner will be acquiring a fantastic above average car they can enjoy straight away. or with little effort. and a bit of money. could have an exceptional example that is destined to become extremely valuable.

In summary. this is a genuine. way above average. rust free and totally solid Volvo 1800E.  These cars have already increased massively in price over the past year. and are on the cusp of becoming extremely valuable. and unaffordable for most enthusiasts.  Therefore. this Volvo represents a superb investment opportunity.  Well restored examples are now commanding £40. 00+ and increasing.  I actually saw one very nice example advertised in Belgium for £52. 00. the signs are there!  I realise that in a couple of years I will bitterly regret having let her go now.

As a classic car. it is stunningly beautiful and so rare. and creates an enormous amount of attention wherever we drive her. including classic car shows where we have rarely seen another. and where we have. ours has outshone the other!  It is fun to drive and has proved reliable. just like you would expect a Volvo to be.  With a little time. effort and money. she could be improved to an exceptional standard. and should you wish. she offers a high starting point to achieve a sensible cost concours standard car.  I knowingly state this. as this was going to be my next concours project after completing a two year concours restoration of my E-type Roadster.
