Sadly the time has come for me to part with my beloved 1957 Morris Minor 1000 traveller. Registered on the 5th of April 1957 it is finished in its original colour of Birch Grey with a contrasting red coach line and interior. This is a very early '1000' traveller from the first few months of production which still retains many character features of the early split screen cars. blended with the increased practicality of the later models. According to the howmanyleft. co. uk website as of the end of 2015 there are only four 1957 Minor 1000 Travellers in the UK only three of which are on the road.

It is an absolute pleasure to drive. The 948cc engine starts first time and is very smooth and responsive. The clutch is light and the gearbox selects all gears smoothly and makes no untoward noises. The brakes pull the car up sharply and in a straight line and the steering is light and responsive but has a period feel owing to the original-type 5. 20 x 14 cross-ply tyres currently fitted.

The car is structurally very sound I have taken some pictures showing the underside of the car at my local garage (See under description) and also the boxing panel (Which are very solid as you can see). It has had some repair work carried out over the years as is to be expected with 59 year old car but these have been done using correct repair panels where required. The woodwork is sound throughout and has a lovely patina (I don't think the frame has ever been replaced and it certainly doesn't need to be).

The bodywork and chrome-work whilst not perfect are very nice. shine well and the car draws admiring glances wherever it goes. The interior is also a very nice place to be retaining its original ‘board type' headlining and supremely comfortable early type seats.

This car has benefitted from a few sympathetic modifications in its life which make it more useable without detracting from its character.

These include:

Conversion to electronic ignition. Later 948cc (1958-63) paper air filter element and housing (Original 'oil bath' unit is included with the car).  The Gearbox and Clutch assembly have been replaced with more robust 1098cc spec units as used on the later minor. Conversion to flashing indicators using period correct components. (A pair of correct 12v SF80 semaphores are included with the car should the new owner wish to re-fit them). Upgrade to halogen headlamps. The addition of vacuum type windscreen washers. A 12v socket has been discreetly fitted under the dashboard to enable a phone to be charged or the use of a Sat Nav etc. A 'late-type' windscreen rubber has been fitted as these are known to seal better and stop water ingress into the car.

Also with the car as you will see in the last photo is a Period Sirram Picnic Hamper. Torch. GEC transistor radio (Non working) and a motorist's lamp for display at shows etc. I don't have much previous history with the car but do have the original blank warranty form. sales brochure. schedule of repair charges. unused service book and AA members handbook. I also have the relevant DVLA documentation showing the vehicle was re-registered before my ownership on the 12th June 2008 having originally been registered 730LMH.   The speedometer shows 54000 miles but I am unable to verify this. Also with the car there are some rally plaques from the car shows I have attended in the car.

All in all. this is an exceptionally sound car which is full of character and is also very practical. It is both tax and MoT exempt and classic insurance is very cheap. Spares for these cars are readily available at reasonable cost. they are economical to run and they hold their value well so this car represents as near to free motoring as you can get. If the car meets reserve I am willing to have the car MoT'd at my cost at my local garage if the winning bidder requires this.

NB: Please Note that the original Morris Showroom Banner pictured in the car is not included with the sale.
