From 1990 to 1995. Mercedes-Benz sold a high-performance version
of the W 124. the Mercedes-Benz 500 E. It was created in close
co-operation with Porsche each one being hand-built by Porsche and
transported back and forth between the Mercedes-Benz plant and
Porsche's Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen. Germany during
assembly. with a full 18 days being taken to complete each car. The
500 E had a naturally aspirated 5. 0 L. V 8 engine derived from the
500 SL (R 129) and braking performance also came from SL components.
The 500 E was manufactured as a four seat saloon and in lefthand
drive only. The leather seats were supplied by Recaro with the
fronts being electrically operated and heated. Called the 'Wolf in
Sheep's Clothing' by the press. performance tests of the day
yielded impressive results with 0-62 mph times of 5. 5 to 6. 0
seconds. The top speed was 161. 5 mph with the engine speed limited
to 6000 rpm. With its aggressive stance. 1. 5 inch wider track. lower
profile. flared wheel arches. side skirts. front air-dam and wider
tyres. the 500 E is easily distinguished from its lesser
brethren.
This superb 1992 500 E has had three owners from new the first
owner had the car fully maintained by a top Mercedes-Benz main
dealer in Germany where the car was originally registered. The
second owner. Mr Peter Rutt. was a well known amateur Porsche 911 S
racer and he had the car serviced by the racing team who looked
after his racing cars he was also responsible for importing the
500 E to the UK in 2012. The last service was carried out recently
by Autobahn Car & Commercial in Blackburn and the vendor had
the air conditioning system overhauled and has fitted four new
Continental tyres. Finished in black. this car was supplied new
with a number of optional extras which included black leather
seats. electric rear blind. electric steering and twin air
bags.
It also comes supplied with a V 5 C registration
document. an Mo T test certificate which expires in July 2016. the
complete original handbook/service book pack and a file of
invoices. Because of its look. limited numbers. hand-built
construction at Porsche and its unique pedigree. the 500 E is
already considered a 'classic' - even within Mercedes-Benz - and
this therefore represents an ideal opportunity to acquire a very
special car.
